Netgear N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router WNDR4500

Negear's N900 Wireless Dual band Gigabit Router is the latest in a recent lineup of impressive dual-band routers from Netgear such as the Netgear N600 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR3700) and the N750 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4000). The N900 is bigger than either of its predecessors, supports 450 Mbps on both bands (Netgear's first router to market to do so), has dual USB ports and a CD-less setup. The best enhancement of all is that the upgraded hardware makes throughput at the 2.4 GHz band almost twice as fast as that of the N750. This is great news, since so many wireless devices, like iPhones, iPods, e-readers, and so on can only connect wirelessly at 2.4 GHz. The N900's 5 GHz throughput is still amazing, but it's not much different than the throughput of the N750 which already had 450 Mbps 5 GHz- capable hardware. So perhaps some people who purchased the N600 or N750 won't have to run out and buy the N900. But anyone who connects a significant numbers of devices to a home wireless network, especially legacy devices, and wants what is likely the beefiest and fastest (at both bands) router on the market will want to consider the N900— despite a few small flaws.

Netgear WNDR4500 Wi-Fi Router Review

It’s easy to become jaded when you review as much cutting-edge hardware as we do. We try not to be curmudgeons, but we do get grumpy when next-gen hardware fails to make a leap in performance—or worse, when it falls behind the gear it’s intended to supplant. So we’re happy to report that benchmarking Netgear’s new WNDR4500 left us grinning from ear to ear. This is the fastest router we’ve ever tested, and it’s packed with new features. Netgear continues to brand its wireless routers with two different model numbers. The WNDR4500, for example, is also marketed as the N900, presumably because this is a dual-band model that’s capable of supporting three 150Mb/s spatial streams on both its 2.4- and 5GHz radios: Three times 150 equals 450, and 450 times two equal 900. That’s nonsense, of course, because the two radios can’t be bonded to serve a single client. It’s also unfortunate, because this router is so fabulous it doesn’t need to be hyped. The WNDR4500 is dramatically faster than the older WNDR3700, which supports only two spatial streams on each of its frequency bands. At close range, the WNDR4500 achieved TCP throughput of 151Mb/s on its 2.4GHz radio, and a staggering 251Mb/s on its 5GHz radio.

Netgear WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router

Netgear's WNDR4500 N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router is the successor to the Netgear WNDR4000 N750 router that we reviewed a while ago. The new router is superior thanks to its dual support for the new 450Mbps standard on both the 2.4GHz and the 5GHz bands, as opposed to only on the 5GHz band in the case of its predecessor. And Netgear has upgraded its Netgear Genie software to encompass both the desktop software and the router's Web interface, making the router easy to manage for home users, yet at the same time robust and comprehensive for advanced users. In terms of performance, the WNDR4500, though selectively faster, is very similar to the WNDR4000, with excellent range and throughput speeds on the 5GHz band. Its 2.4GHz band, however, could use some improvement in data rates. The router's built-in support for network storage via its two USB ports didn't provide fast enough bandwidth to be considered as a viable NAS solution. To make up for this, the router's wireless signals are very stable and it also offers lots of features, including robust parental controls, a detailed Network Map, an Internet bandwidth meter, and IPv6.

Netgear WNDR4500 Review

Netgear‘s latest wireless router, the WNDR4500, promises to be the company's best yet. Packing simultaneous 2.4GHz and 5GHz support, dual USB ports for NAS duty and printer sharing, gigabit ethernet and enough style to put most networking kit to shame, the WNDR4500 also promises to be straightforward to install thanks to Netgear's Genie app. Check out the full SlashGear review after the cut. Slim and tall is Netgear's design language right now, with the WNDR4500 a sleekly designed monolith with an integrated transparent plastic stand. Despite the small footprint, it proved stable even with six chunky Cat6 cables hanging off the four gigabit ethernet ports at the back. They share space with a pair of USB 2.0 ports - Netgear tells us this was a performance consideration, rather than USB 3.0 - a gigabit WAN port, power, recessed reset hole and physical power switch. There's no shortage of indicator lights, either. Running down the front panel are LEDs for power, internet, 2.4GHz and 5GHz status, along with individual lights for each of the ethernet ports and each USB port. Up top are buttons for WPS and wireless. The WNDR4500 has a small fan to keep things cool, but it's a very quiet example.
