The NEC E231W ($259 direct) will appeal to business users looking to cut back on power consumption while maintaining a green office environment. This 23-inch monitor uses energy saving LED backlighting, Intelligent Power Management, and multiple ECO modes to help conserve power, and it'll even track your electricity costs. Performance is good for the most part, although it does have trouble displaying light shades of gray. There's also a touch of backlight bleed along the top and bottom of the screen. As with most business displays, the E231W comes in one color; black. The 1920 x 1080 TN+ panel is framed by thin (0.75 inch) bezels, but its 2.8-inch thick cabinet is fatter than most LED monitors, such as the 1-inch thick HP 2310e ($299.99 list, 3 stars). The 9.3-pound cabinet is supported by a round stand that offers the full gamut of ergonomic adjustments, including height, tilt, swivel, and pivot maneuverability. The only thing missing is support for auto-image rotation; you'll have to use your graphics card's control panel to switch between portrait and landscape mode.
The NEC Multisync E231W offers an abundance of features for the relatively low price of $300. While playing games, its colors left a lot to be desired and many of its preset settings were disappointing, necessitating some detailed calibrating on our part. Those shortcomings are made up for by its full ergonomic support, a robust OSD with some useful features, and its aforementioned $300 price tag. It's difficult to find a well-performing 23-incher with full ergo support, but NEC found a way to offer this one at a competitive price. At first glance, the 23-inch NEC E231W looks a lot like its cousin the NEC EA221wm, with a black, matte finish and semi-angular corners. The initial depth of the panel is a fairly deep 1.25 inches, followed by another 1.5 inches, including the connection options and ventilation system. This brings the full depth to 2.75 inches. The right and left sides of the bezel are a small 0.75 inches in width. With the panel adjusted to its lowest depth, the distance from the bottom of the bezel to the desktop is about 2.1 inches and 6.5 inches from its highest. The full width of the display is 21.6 inches; a hair smaller than the Samsung PX2370.
