Beats by Dr. Dre Solo review

Unless you've been hiding indoors for the last 12 months, you'll probably have noticed a lot of people walking around wearing headphones with a distinctive 'b' logo on them.Monster's Beats by Dr. Dre headphones are a triumph of marketing. After the launch in 2009, they're now stocked in almost every high street in the UK. Branches of HMV have entire sections devoted to them. The trademark red audio cables that come with Beats headphones have become almost as iconic as Apple's white iPod cables in just a short space of time. It's a meteoric rise to prominence that simply must be down to them being the best headphones in town. Right?Well they certainly look good. The packaging they come in screams 'premium' and the build quality of the headphones themselves is second to none. Even before you put them on your head, they look and feel the part. They fold up nicely for easy transportation, and come with a padded carry case. You also get two audio cables – one standard 3.5mm cable and another that's compatible with ControlTalk. With ControlTalk you can use the inline remote on the cable to play/pause your music and toggle volume up and down without putting your hand in your pocket.

Headphones Reviews

Monster keeps on expanding its oh-so-popular Beats by Dr. Dre headphones range. Unfortunately, in spite of the celebrity endorsements and stylish design, these headphones systematically fall into the same traps, model after model. Since these headphones are pretty much identical to other products in the Dr. Dre range, it's no real surprise to see the same design flaws back again. In other words, although the headphones seem to be quite well made, the materials seem a little flimsy and they don't look like they'll stand the test of time. The cable looks quite fragile too. That's a shame, since with such a distinctive design—that you'll either love or hate—and a good-quality finish, the Solo headphones had started off on the right track. The accessories are pretty flimsy too. Although the semi-rigid travel case is nicely designed, it still feels fragile. It's also the only accessory supplied. On this front, Monster (and most other headphones manufacturers) could learn a thing or two from in-ear headphones makers, who regularly supply products with huge ranges of accessories. Some of these are obviously gimmicky gadgets but others are very handy indeed.

Beats by Dr. Dre Solo Review

We review the Solo On-Ear headphones, part of Monster's Beats by Dr. Dre high performance line of headphones. In 2008, ever-popular audio accessory giant Monster Cable announced a partnership with legendary hip-hop producer Dr. Dre aimed at delivering a new line of custom headphones designed to bring studio-quality audio to the masses. It would appear that the company’s goal to create a new breed of headphone listener has been successful, as today, the Beats by Dr. Dre brand is wildly popular and steadily putting the pressure on some of the other hip headphone makers like Skullcandy. With the Solo, we’re happy to report that Monster and Dre provide a high-quality set of headphones that sounds every bit as slick as it looks, and even offers iPod control and iPhone talking features that are oft-looked over by other headphone manufacturers. Though not without their glitches, the bottom line is as follows – the Solo’s benefits far outweigh their limitations and are a solid buy at the asking price of $199.00.The Solo headphones come attractively packaged in a high-gauge box that is as solid as the headphones themselves.
