Microsoft Touch Mouse review

The mouse. An icon of computing. An essential tool of the workplace and the home. It can show off great style, be purely functional or be an out and out gaming plaything. It can boast two buttons, seventeen buttons or be buttonless. The mouse can be a huge, hunch-backed beast, or a svelte thin-as-a-PC Card travel buddy. The computer mouse, in other words, can say as much about you as anything else you attach to your PC or Mac. The latest mouse to enter this throng is the cautiously stylish Microsoft Touch Mouse, and it's a freak of nature. Let us backtrack a little. Those sober lines could be seen as the height of style to some. Plus there are some neat little tricks and ideas on display to make you want to rub its sleek form. There's a major problem that needs voicing for this chunky rodent though. It fails on one major level, and that's that it's horrible to actually click anything with. The amount of force needed to click an icon, menu or application with the Microsoft Touch Mouse is more than any other mouse we've come across. It's incredibly frustrating, and this alone had us reaching for any other mouse we could lay our hands on rather than trying to interact with this monstrosity.

Microsoft Touch Mouse Review

Combining the pinpoint control of a traditional mouse with multitouch gestures, the Microsoft Touch Mouse is designed to make navigating Windows 7 just as fluid as with a notebook touchpad. Priced at $69.95, the Touch Mouse is definitely a high-end peripheral, but its intuitive controls make it a worthy companion to your PC.Soft, rounded corners and gentle sloping angles make the Microsoft Touch Mouse easy on the hands and the eyes. The top of the device is made of matte black plastic, the front of which is covered in rows of raised gold dots and Xs, indicating the mouse's touch-sensitive area. A shallow groove demarcates the left- and right-click buttons. The bottom of the mouse is made of white plastic. Here, you'll find a power switch plus a divot where the mouse's tiny USB receiver can be stored when not in use. A pair of AA batteries power the mouse. Both right- and left-handed users can easily operate the 4.7 x 2.4-inch Touch Mouse. The mouse's gentle contour fit our hand well, and was comfortable even after an hour of use. However, the mouse's 4.7-ounce weight is slightly heavy compared to other mice. It's not exactly tailor-made for travel. The Touch Mouse will only work with computers running Windows 7.

Microsoft Touch Mouse

Microsoft has recently been expanding its mouse portfolio into the world of touch, but its new Microsoft Touch Mouse ($79.95 list) is its most impressive yet. Rivaling Apple's Magic Mouse ($69 direct, 3.5 stars) in terms of both form and function, the Touch Mouse is optimized for Windows 7 and incorporates enough gestures and features to suit almost all your everyday needs. This is the best touch mouse you can buy for the PC. The Microsoft Touch Mouse has a simple black matte plastic structure that works for both right- and left-handed users, and distinguishes its left and right only buttons only by a small slit running down its middle. It provides plenty of space to perform fluid gesture functions; a pattern of gold Xs and a textured surface (which also reduces drag) indicate where the touch sensor begins and ends (just before where you rest your palm). Even when my hands were clammy after coming in from a humid NYC summer day, my fingers had little issue touch-scrolling through a webpage. On the bottom of the mouse, there's a slot for storing the wireless USB dongle when toting it around. If you travel frequently, the Microsoft Arc Touch ($67.95 list, 3.5 stars) is slimmer and would be easier to transport.

Computer Mice Reviews

Microsoft's answer to Apple's Magic Mouse is the new Touch Mouse. The Apple Magic Mouse is white and flat, but the Microsoft version is black and curvy. After trying them both, our question is whether or not the dark side will win out over the force ... Microsoft is hoping that the touch-sensitive surfaces on the top and left-hand side of its new mouse, the Bluetrack sensor and the wireless technology will combine to make the perfect pointing device. Unfortunately, though, it's not as simple as that. Even if you do get used to the new system very quickly, it's less accurate than using a normal mouse, so we can't see it being a hit with demanding users. In a video published online, Microsoft has tried to explain how the different movements are supposed to work: you use your thumb to move backwards and forwards between web pages, your index finger for scrolling, two fingers to minimise a window and move it around, three fingers to access your desktop and so on. Here's their tutorial: Our more demanding tests came to more or less the same conclusion. The Bluetrack sensor can't cope when you move the mouse any faster than 1.5 m/s. In the heat of the action, you'll easily reach double that with some games.
