The LifeCam HD-3000 is a mid-range Microsoft webcam that's just a step down from the LifeCam Studio. Like the Studio, this LifeCam is a plug and play webcam, which makes it particularly easy to set up and use. Once connected to your computer, the webcam software and drivers are automatically downloaded—all you need to do then is install them. Unlike the sleek aluminium finish of the LifeCam Studio, the HD-3000 is made from shiny black plastic. Both webcams do, however, have a similar flexible rubber-finish stand which can be easily stood on a desk, a CRT monitor or an LCD monitor. However, this webcam doesn't have a vertical tilt function. You can therefore angle the webcam to the right or the left, but not up or down, which means you'll either need to tilt your computer screen or bend the stand to make sure you're in shot. The LifeCam HD-3000 has an autofocus function and a 720p sensor that can film at up to 30 frames per second (see below). The HD-3000 also has a mono microphone with a noise-reduction filter. A quick glance at the tech specs may lead you to believe that this webcam films in 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. Unfortunately though, that's not the case!

Looking for an HD webcam, but don't want to spend a lot of money? The $39.95 (direct) Microsoft LifeCam HD-3000 attempts to deliver much of the same high-definition goodness as the LifeCam Studio ($99, 4 stars), but at less than half the price. For the basics, the HD-3000 succeeds, though if your laptop already has one built-in, this webcam isn't enough of an upgrade. Measuring 4.3 by 1.8 inches (HW), the main body is made entirely of plastic, unlike the larger LifeCam Studio's aluminum body, but it shares the same kind of easy-to-position, rubberized mount that works with desktop LCDs, older CRT monitors, and laptop screens. However, it's missing a crucial component: tilt adjustment along the Y axis. As a result, it just sits on top of the monitor. You can pivot it left or right, but not up or down. If your head is half cut off in the on-screen window, your only options are a shorter chair, tilting the entire monitor, or angling the webcam so it's no longer resting securely. To get started, you'll need Windows 7, Vista, or XP (with Service Pack 2), and at least a dual-core Intel PC running at 1.6GHz or faster. 720p video requires a 3GHz dual-core Intel PC and 2GB of RAM.
