Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse review

The Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse is yet another innovative addition to the long-line of classic designs that the Microsoft Hardware group has blessed the world with over the years. The Arc Touch Mouse attempts to take style and function to a new level in the modern mouse world by combining a wireless portable mouse with touch-sensitive features and the BlueTrack sense system. The result is the Arc Touch. The name partly gives away its key design feature: a flexible rear section that doubles as the main wrist support and also folds flat turning the mouse off and leaving it perfect for carrying.Beyond its physical design, the Arc Touch mouse uses an Apple Magic Mouse besting touch-sensitive wheel. With built in haptic feedback this adds a sense of style beyond just its design through unobtrusive technology. But the real question is it any good to mouse with? The centrepiece to the Microsoft Arc Mouse is its folding rear, beyond just being a fancy way to turn the mouse on or off, it provides a physical support to the rear of the mouse and offers an ergonomic grip.

Microsoft Arc Touch

Microsoft's Arc Touch ($67.95 list) mouse is about as portable as you can get and adds style to the otherwise plain mobile mouse market. However, the price for such a hot product may make your wallet crawl back into your back pocket. The Arc Touch has one of the most unique form factors I have seen in a mouse. When off, it lays in a prone position (2.28 by 5.14-inches, WH), but to power it on the mouse sits bent; its back arched to create a comfortable structure to hold and navigate with. The mouse buttons are encased in glossy black plastic that tends to attract smudge marks and the like. Breaking up the black is the touch scroll wheel that's encased in a silver matte plastic. The palm portion on the Arc Touch has a soft rubberized coating, found mostly on gaming mice like the Gigabyte M8000Xtreme ($59.99 list, 4.5 stars). This coating gives the Arc Touch a solid grip and a comfortable feel as opposed to the plastic matte finishes found on mice like the Logitech Wireless Mouse M305 ($29.99 direct, 4 stars). In terms of buttons, the Arc Touch is outfitted with the basics - a left and right click, and touch scroll. Most mice rolling out these days as least have the two browser buttons, but Microsoft decided to leave this extra out.

The Microsoft Arc Touch Mouse can be carried or stored flat and then popped up into an arc-shaped mouse when ready to use. There's no denying it's a great idea, and the product is equally as convincing once it's in your hand. Aside from the folding design, another interesting new concept is the virtual scroll wheel. This touch-sensitive strip reproduces the click-round notches of a regular scroll wheel right under your finger. Plus, depending on how fast you want to scroll, this virtual wheel can be set to click-round in controlled steps or to free-wheel for endless scrolling in one sweep of the finger. The Arc Touch Mouse is very well finished and it looks and feels like a quality product. When flipped up into its arched position, the mouse is a good height—your hand is well supported and rests in a comfortable position. The notches in the virtual scroll wheel can feel quite disorientating at first, as they actually feel very realistic. The noise the mouse makes when you fold it out inspires confidence. The product certainly seems sturdy, although you do have to wonder just how long it will last if you fold and unfold it every day. We were also curious to find out whether pressing too hard on the mouse would make it snap back into the flat position.

Microsoft Arc Touch

Microsoft has come up with a unique new product in the Arc Touch Mouse, thanks to its clever, convertible design and its touch-sensitive scroll wheel. Like the original Arc Mouse, and the Philippe Starck-designed mice before it, the Arc Touch Mouse is mostly a fashion statement wrapped in a few interesting features. We would still opt for a more traditional mouse for day-to-day productivity, or even for travel, but the Arc Touch Mouse will appeal to people with an eye for design or technical novelty. The Arc Touch Mouse hasn't been Microsoft's best kept secret, with hints and leaks popping up online all summer. Despite early assumptions that arose from those leaks, we don't believe Microsoft is positioning the Arc Touch Mouse as the answer to Apple's Magic Mouse. The two have passing likeness in that they each rely on touch-based input to varying degrees, but the Arc Touch Mouse is far more traditional than the Apple design in terms of its functionality. Unlike the Magic Mouse, the Arc Touch Mouse still uses two physical buttons for the primary left-and-right click functions. The Microsoft design also has no support for gesture recognition.
