Reviews: Media Centres

A smaller version of the MediaDisk ZX HD, the Memup MediaGate LNX HD is a nicely designed multimedia gateway. What are the differences between the two? Does the ZX HD stand up to the competition? Answers in our test! The MediaGate LNX HD and MediaDisk ZX HD both use the same graphics interface. We're therefore not going to repeat what we've already said, but merely concentrate on what's different here. First of all, the LNX HD doesn't have a digital TV tuner and there's no space for an internal hard drive. You therefore have to play content via the network (Ethernet 100 Mbps, Wi-Fi on option), USB or via the SDHC memory card reader. In any case, you'll have to avoid videos that are too heavy in terms of throughput. When using the USB, there shouldn't be too many problems as the limit comes in at 34 Mbps (for H.264/MKV video). You do get videos with a higher Mbps but they're quite rare. In contrast, via the network you're limited to 28 Mbps and this will make more of a difference with 1080p videos tending to be jumpy. We think the design of this media centre is quite successful.
