You've heard of Marshall... They're possibly the most well-known electric guitar and bass amp manufacturer in the world. Well, several months ago, the company decided to round out its catalogue of axe stacks with an earphone, the Minor, and a heaphone, the Major (tested here). To create the Major, Marshall partnered up with the Scandinavian headphone manufacturer Zound Industries, whose path we have already crossed in previous tests. The result? While certain parts have been customised for the amp maker, others are nothing new. The build is good—not great. The covering on the plastic headband is made of stuffed artificial leather strips that contain visible stitchwork. These are neat and tidy at a glance, but after closer examination the seams look a little sloppy. But it's not a horror story, either. Same goes for the earpieces. The stuffing is firm, yet comfortable, and the covering is made of fairly good quality material. Just watch out for that interior lining in the earcups: held in place by nothing but the padding around it, chances are it'll deteriorate with time. The length adjusters are made of simple, yet effective metal clips set inside plastic clasps. These look like they'll hold, as long as you don't go twisting them around too much. Plus, the Majors fold in for compact storage (which makes them all the more fragile).
Review: The Marshall Major headphones tap into the brand’s distinguished history for a unique design, but fall short of the sound you might expected from the fabled amp manufacturer. It seems like everyone and their cousin’s brother is making headphones now. It also seems like we’ve made a similar comment in almost every headphone review we’ve published over the last couple of months. In fact, both statements are true and we think we’ve deduced why. It’s all based around a concept we’ve decided to call “bandwagon headphones.”Bandwagon headphones are headphones that come along because a company, often not even related to the audio industry, suddenly decides it wants to tap the cash cow that is the mobile device accessory market. It would seem, on the surface anyway, that our headphone maker du jour, Marshall, would fit in that category. At least Marshall has a storied history and legendary reputation in guitar amplification. As such, the British company has been and continues to be involved in sound and music in a very prolific way. With that said, we have to point out that Marshall, in its nearly 50-year history, has never made a headphone before.
