Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515 review

Before Apple was touting integrating the AirPlay protocol into its iPad and iPhone range (and iMacs and, well, everything else) we got by just fine with Bluetooth, thank you very much.While small AirPlay speakers are still few and far between, little portable Bluetooth speakers are thriving, and though Logitech is aiming this at iPad users with the name, it's just a standard Bluetooth speaker, so anyone can use it.It packs a rechargeable battery, good for up to 10 hours of use, an aux-in slot for plugging in non-Bluetooth sources, and a mains port for charging.The front is all business, featuring a grille covering the drivers, and light indicating the battery level and wireless connection status. The back features a fold-out stand and a small receded area with the on/off button and two volume controls. The unit isn't super-light, but can be carried comfortably in one hand thanks to its concave shape.Getting it paired with your device is a simple matter: you turn it on and then hold the two volume buttons. It'll then appear as a device to pair to on your iPad, and away you go.The range is good; we took about 10 metres from the iPad with two thick stone walls in between the devices before the music started getting quite stop-start.

Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515

Lightweight and thin, the Logitech Wireless Speaker Z515 delivers audio quality you'd expect from a small portable speaker system. It's easy to pack or tote around in a bag, and it has a built-in kickstand that angles the speakers upward for better listening. The speaker's sound, however, leaves much to be desired. Though no reasonable person would glance at the Z515 and expect booming bass or even distortion-free audio at high volumes, for $99.99 (direct) you might expect something more. That something here is wireless Bluetooth audio: The system streams music from Bluetooth devices, like a PC or an Apple iPhone ($199, 4 stars). Whether this useful wireless feature is enough for you to overlook the mediocre audio quality, though, is debatable. The younger sibling of the significantly larger, but still portable Logitech Rechargeable Speaker S715i ($149.99, 3.5 stars), the Z515 measures roughly 4.4 by 10.1 by 2.1 inches and weighs 1.3 pounds. It ships with an AC adapter that also charges the internal rechargeable battery, which Logitech rates with a life of roughly 10 hours. The front panel of the black, smooth-edged Z515 houses two two-inch drivers, just under three inches apart. They are covered by a metallic, black grille with a Logitech logo centered between them.
