Logitech Marathon Mouse M705

Logitech is no stranger to our site, as we have reviewed many of its products in the past. Things have been a little quiet recently, but that is about to change as we take one of its latest offerings for a test, the Marathon Mouse M705. The M705 has a few interesting features under its belt, but the one that'll grab most people's attention is the 3 year battery life for an RF-based wireless mouse. No that was not a typo... I really did say 3 years! How this was achieved will be explained later, but for now, I'll run by its other key features. The M705 is an RF-based wireless, 1000 DPI laser mouse that uses Logitech's trusted Unified (nano) receiver. It's an 8 button design with a 4-way HyperScroll wheel. Measuring at just 4.25 inches long, it's a tad dainty, but not quite a portable scale. A light ergonomic shape catered towards right-handers proves comfortable despite being small in stature. The HyperScroll is effectively a free-moving scroll wheel with an optional lock to make it act like a normal scroll, providing feedback and a click for each partial rotation. When the lock is disabled via the top button, the wheel becomes very loose and capable of scrolling at exceptional speed.

Logitech Marathon Mouse M705

Prepare for one of the smoothest scrolling and navigating experiences with Logitech's Marathon Mouse M705 ($49.99 direct). It's fitted with Logitech's Darkfield Laser Technology that allows for optimal tracking across glass and a multitude of surfaces. Combined with the Unifying Wireless USB (2.4GHz), which allows you to sync up to 6 devices to one USB, and a strong feature set, earns our Editors' Choice for general-purpose mice. Adorned in blacks and greys, the M705 has a modest, yet sophisticated design. It looks as if it could fit in with the business crowd. Structurally, the device felt natural in my hands, there was even a comfort-groove with a soft rubber lining that cradled my thumb. Under my thumb is a button that splays out all the windows you have open into an organized display. Right above my thumb were the back/forward browser buttons. In between the matte plastic mouse buttons was a plastic and metallic scroll wheel that provided a smooth ratchet-scrolling experience. The ratchet can also be disabled for a more free-flowing scroll that, Logitech has boasted, can move through 10,000 lines in 7 seconds.

Product Survey: Mice

The first three of these speak for themselves. It is an attractive mouse; you can change the batteries; it does have an intelligent scrollwheel. Once you've tried the M705, it's very hard to go back. By default, the scrollwheel turns normally, with very wide notches that are a little too big for our liking. They also make turning it rather loud. A single press on the button behind allows the wheel to turn freely. Give it a push and away it goes until it runs out of steam. And it turns very, very well. Getting straight to the bottom of a long page is very easy. Of course, some people will prefer one mode over the other, which is why having the choice is such a big advantage when several people use the same computer--in a family, for instance. Everybody can choose to use it how they prefer. The shape of the M705, though, left us unconvinced. It's pretty tall and, at 11 cm, it's noticeably longer than a mouse designed for use with a laptop (usually around 9 cm) and ends up taking up almost as much space as a normal mouse. It's still smaller than a traditional mouse like the Ikari Laser shown on the right, which measures 13.5 cm, which means it's very difficult to get hold of.
