The biggest issue with wireless keyboards is at some point their batteries run out. Logitech has solved this problem with its Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 for Mac ($59.99 direct), and it's $10 cheaper than the Apple Wireless Keyboard ($69 direct, 4 stars), and it doesn't requires batteries. Perpetually drawing its power from ambient light through its solar panels, the keyboard maintains a constant charge, which is why we are giving it our PCMag Green Tech award. Its plug-and-play functionality is a boon to non-tech-savvy consumers in terms of its ease of use, but Mac users will likely question why there's no Bluetooth support, like there is on every product from Apple. It also falls short in terms of ergonomics; the low-profile scissor-style chiclet keys feel more like that of a laptop keyboard, which is the last thing that a desktop-class keyboard should feel like. The K750 for Mac is a full-size keyboard equipped with a numeric keypad for number crunchers. The matte white chiclet keys are framed by glossy white plastic. Along the tapered edges of the keyboard is a matte white line that frames the entire 1.4-by-19.1-by-7.9-inch (HWD) rectangular structure. At the top of the keyboard, glossy green plastic frames the solar panels, breaking up the white.
The main selling point of Logitech Wireless Solar Keyboard K750's ($79.99 direct) is the fact that - as its name indicates - it's solar powered. Through the solar panels located on top of the keyboard, it perpetually draws power from ambient light - inside the office and out. In addition, its plug-and-play functionality extends this keyboard to non-tech-savvy consumers in its ease of use, and its extensive feature set, which includes Logitech's SetPoint software and Unifying receiver, is enough to entice anyone. Unfortunately, it falls short in terms of ergonomics; the low-profile chiclet keys feel more like a laptop typing experience, which is the last thing that a desktop-class keyboard should feel like. The K750 is a full-size keyboard equipped with a numeric keypad for number crunchers. The matte black chiclet keys are framed by glossy black plastic that will attract dust and smudges. Along the tapered edges of the keyboard is a matte white line that frames the entire 1.4 by 19.1 by 7.9 inch (HWD) rectangular structure, breaking up the black. Altogether the K750 has a sophisticated look, with a thin, light structure and simple color design; it should fit in with an all-in-one PC or any clean desktop space - if that's the look you're going for.
The problem with wireless peripherals is that they run out of charge and, in most cases, it's always at the most inopportune time. With the Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 however, Logitech says you won't have to worry about that ever happening. Logitech says its keyboard can run for three months after it has been charged. Before we began testing the K750 we placed it near a window, which allowed sunlight to hit the keyboard's photovoltaic cells for three days. The keyboard has a battery check button that can help you get a quick idea of charge levels but if you want a more accurate indication of battery life, Logitech provides a useful app.At the end of our month long test period where we used the keyboard for no less than eight hours a day, the K750's battery indicator still showed green. Impressive. The Wireless Solar Keyboard features a chiclet design and is extremely slim at 8.5mm. Despite this we found the keyboard sufficiently sturdy though the keys are slightly noisier than what we're used to from Logitech. Given its price tag we would have also appreciated a palm rest being supplied as standard.
Logitech calls its $79 Wireless Solar Keyboard K750 an innovation in typing technology, and after using our evaluation model for a week, we certainly agree. The dual solar panels mounted on top of the superthin keyboard require zero user effort to keep the device charged and ready to type, while the accompanying Solar App desktop software shows precisely how much battery life is left. Partnered with Logitech's convenient Unifying Receiver that lets you connect multiple Logitech input devices to a single USB plug, we're very much in favor of the Logitech K750. In fact, we're giving it an Editors' Choice Award, and recommend it to anyone shopping for a new keyboard. With its low-profile keycaps and a glossy black mirrored finish behind them, the K750 solar keyboard looks more like a disconnected laptop keyboard than its desktop counterparts. Unlike the mechanical keyboards currently popular in the peripheral market, this input device uses scissor switches underneath that register key presses with a lighter touch, and give the additional benefit of low noise. This type of keyswitch also allows Logitech to reduce the thickness of the keyboard chassis to just one-third of an inch. The standout features on the K750 are obviously the dual solar panels that sit on either side of the logo branding on top of the keys.
There's a lot to admire about the K750. Its headline feature is that you do not need to keep replacing the batteries, unlike other wireless keyboards. For anyone who has experienced trying to type when a wireless keyboard's batteries are on their last legs, this is a big plus. As long as the keyboard gets enough light, you can keep on typing without interruption. Making sure the keyboard remains charged isn't too much of a problem either - the battery life is around three months in complete darkness, though of course it's not recommended that you use computers in complete darkness anyway. If you have left the keyboard in a drawer for a long time, a quick press of a button lets you know if the keyboard has enough charge. Not needing to go through disposable batteries makes this a very ecologically friendly keyboard, and the 100 per cent recycled packaging that it comes in reinforces this green ideal. The keyboard is incredibly thin, which makes it easy to carry about and store, however it isn't as comfortable to type on than more ergonomically designed keyboards.
Review: The Logitech K750 wireless keyboard kills the hassle of cords and batteries in one blow with a clever solar-powered design. When you have companies slapping solar cells on everything from cell phones to backpacks so they can tie on recycled-cardboard tags with hemp cord, call them green, and charge twice the price, it’s easy to get jaded and dismiss solar gadgets as gimmicks. Until about the third time you have to replace or recharge the batteries in your wireless keyboard, and realize a solar panel would eliminate that need forever. Like calculators and watches, Logitech’s K750 proves that wireless keyboards make ideal candidates for solar-panel transplants, giving users both convenience and a clear conscience. At first glace, some users might not even give second thought to the inch tall strips of solar cells above the keys on the K750. Surrounded by black and situated under a seamless, glossy layer of plastic, they stand out less than you might imagine, but provide all the power the keyboard needs. The bigger news here, from a design standpoint, is Logitech’s transition to the Chiclet style of keys, formerly a space-saving style reserved for notebooks (think MacBooks and Sony Vaios).
Logitech has launched the first 100% solar-powered wireless keyboard that can be recharged via natural light or under artificial lighting. This keyboard requires no cables, no AA batteries and has a small internal battery that can keep it running for several months should it be deprived of a light source. It's impressive, to say the least. Another nice surprise—especially considering this product is unique on the market and packed with brand new technology—is that the K750 is still pretty affordable. It'll launch with an RRP of £70 and will be available in online stores from December 2010 and from January 2011 in high-street shops. It looks like the Logitech K750 could soon become a shining example in the world of green technology, as it's one of the most genuinely eco-friendly consumer electronics products currently available (see insert). The 'L' key on the K750. Concave keys that spaced apart The 'L' key on the K800. Four adjustable levels of backlighting Ten years of hard work When we see a product this attractive, this innovative, we almost expect it do everything and more besides. So we were naturally wondering why this new keyboard isn't backlit.
