The Logitech HD Webcam C510 is a mid-range webcam that can film in HD resolution. As well as high-definition video, it has a very practical stand and advanced functions like facial tracking, a digital zoom and automatic focusing. Plus, once folded up, this webcam can easily be slipped into a bag or pocket. The C510 has a fairly basic design with a casing that's made from both shiny and matte black plastics. Like the C910, the camera is located in the centre of the casing but, unlike its higher-end counterpart, this model has no second microphone, which means it records mono rather than stereo sound. That may put some picky users off, but for most people, stereo sound is still an unnecessary luxury when chatting on Messenger and Skype. The C510 is mounted on a swivel stand, which means it can be moved around 360° on its horizontal axis while still being tilted fairly far forwards or backwards. The clip-on attachment system is classic stuff but, like the C310, the stand lacks stability when stood on a table or clipped onto a laptop screen. It's therefore best suited to LCD monitors ... so long as they're not too slim! This Logitech webcam has a 720p sensor.

Logitech HD Webcam C510 review

Should you baulk at the cost of the FaceVsion TouchCam N1 then you will no doubt be happier to see that Logitech isn't asking anywhere near the £90-odd price tag slapped on that solid little number. TheHD Webcam C510 comes in at a more pleasing £40, but doesn't have any of the Fischer Price stylings of the cheaper cams like Genius' offerings. This is a sleek, black camera, that's more on the unobtrusive side than the showy. It's solidly made and comes with the now-traditional three-way connecting mechanism for mounting on your laptop, LCD display or desktop. Realistically though you're unlikely to want it stood on your desk as it's not entirely stable… The C510 also comes with a packed bundle aside from the necessary evil of driver installation disks. It comes with a launcher for the camera which gives you access to a host of related apps that you can download for free to use with the C510. It also links in with any software ready to use the HD camera, such as the latest Skype client and Live Movie Maker too. Aside from Skype it also comes with Logitech's own HD video calling app, called Vid HD.

Logitech C510 HD Webcam

The $60 Logitech HD Webcam C510 is slightly fancier than its linemate, the C310, but for $10 more you get a significantly better-quality camera with 8-megapixel capacity snapshots and full 720p wide-screen HD video for chatting with friends on programs like Skype and Yahoo! Messenger. We also appreciate its ability to swivel 360-degrees on its base for full pans, and the accompanying Logitech Webcam software makes it easy (and fun) to upload your goofy photos and video to social networking sites like Facebook and YouTube. If you're in the market for an aftermarket Webcam, the Logitech HD Webcam C510 earns our recommendation. Like the C310, the C510 is also designed to mount on both desktops and laptops thanks to the two joints built into the base that allow it to brace against a monitor. We had no problem connecting the Webcam to a variety of screens and computers, but the camera tends to move around if you bump the table, so we're hoping the next version will have some kind of locking mechanism to keep the camera still on its base.

The Logitech HD Webcam C510 joins the small but growing party of webcams able to make high-def video calls with a relatively compact, foldable design. In addition to videoconferencing in greater detail, the C510 ($59.99) also lets you upload HD videos directly to Facebook and YouTube. However, you won't be able see that high-def quality when using Skype. So is this peripheral worth the investment?About the size of a large lighter and twice as thick, the sturdy Logitech C510 is more than an inch shorter and over half an ounce lighter than the boxy FaceVsion Touchcam N1. We also like the classy, polished accents. The C510's 5-foot USB cord is permanently attached to the back of the camera lens. That means slipping the webcam into the included mesh bag involves wrapping the cord up first, which is slightly more cumbersome and messy than packing up the N1, which has a detachable cord.The C510 has a lens that can rotate 360 degrees, which makes it easy to record the action around you. It also includes rubberized pads on the two-part clipping mechanism that help prevent scratches. In short, the C510 will look good sitting on top of your notebook's display, external monitor, or simply resting on the stand's rounded bottom for desktops.
