Here Logitech is marketing a very high end webcam. On paper, the spec is mouthwatering. The C910 has a Carl Zeiss sensor with 1920 x 1080 pixel definition (Full HD) protected by a glass plate, two microphones, situated on either side of the webcam and automatic focus. In spite of its weight (138 grammes), its base and the anti-slip surface mean it's easy to fix to any type of surface (desk, cathode ray screen, laptop screen and flat screen). For the last few years, webcam manufacturers have been fighting it out to give ever higher definition. As you can see with the C910, Logitech is now marketing a FULL HD camera. Both Live Messenger and Skype are however limited to a maximum of 720p for video conversation. What's more, the video flow is also compressed to avoid too much jumpiness due to internet bandwidth limitations, which results in a considerable loss in quality. At the end of the day, you won't be using even half the capacity of such a webcam. The only way to get the most out of such a peripheral is to use the video creation software that comes with it (not the case with many users).

Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910

The Logitech HD Pro Webcam C910 ($100, due out in August) stands out among the growing crowd of HD Webcams. I took a final production version for a trial, and found that the HD Pro Webcam is easy to use, captures crisp and vivid video, and has excellent sound quality. The most advanced of Logitech's latest models, this Webcam shoots in full HD 1080p and snaps 10-megapixel still photos with its Carl Zeiss optics lens. Judging from the specs, it has the best video quality of the three latest Logitech models, and it provides an autofocus lens, a dual built-in microphone for optimal video chatting, premium automatic light correction, and fun Logitech video effects similar to those found in Apple's Photo Booth. The C910 is long, sleek, and rectangular, measuring just a little less than an inch deep. It fits snugly on the top or side of your monitor, and stays in place nicely with the attached adjustable arm. Setup is simple: If you already have video-calling software installed on your PC (such as Skype or Logitech Vid), you just plug the camera in via its attached USB cable, and it's ready to go. Though the camera was designed as a counterpart to Logitech's new Vid HD service, it is also Skype-certified and works beautifully with that software. Downloading Vid HD is the longest part of setup; but once the program is installed, it's actually much more intuitive to use than Skype is.
