Logitech G500

At Digit, we're strong advocates of gaming. As a pastime, a hobby, or just for kicks – gaming is a whole heap of fun and can be made more so by the subject of this review. Gaming mice are fast becoming a norm for err gamers. Interested in a dose of nostalgia? The G500 succeeds the G5, which, in turn succeeded the MX518 - the mouse that started it all. We've all used the MX518 and thank the day Logitech introduced this model, for singlehandedly it changed the scene of gaming mice in the country. Let me rephrase that – it created the scene that the mice of today enjoy. Introduced some five years back, the MX518 quickly became a hit owing to its (then) relatively cheaper price of Rs. 1,700. Then came the G series, starting with the G5 and wireless G7, although these weren't as successful in India. Notice the sculpting designed for your thumb. The finish also looks better than the one on the MX518 and G5. Logitech G500 review

Logitech's G500 is wired, has 11 buttons (including 10 that are customisable) and comes with 27g worth of miniature weights to alter its heft. Its closest rival, Microsoft's Sidewinder X8, can be either wired or wireless, has 12 buttons (with seven customisable) and comes with three sets of feet that alter its friction. Working out the best purchase at the high end of the gaming mice market can feel like tumbling down a rabbit hole into a very particular obsession. Let's start with the basics. The G500 looks nice and sits comfortably in the hand, and the downloadable Logitech SetPoint software provides preset options (undo, paste, scroll and so on) that you can assign to each button. For more complicated programming, the Macro Editor records keyboard and mouse actions. Your settings are saved into the mouse's internal memory, so travel with you. The weights are much less practical. You can slot a selection of the 12 included into the mouse's underside. They provide no real benefit, but packaged inside a padded steel case, they feel important and technical. Like expensive speaker stands do for an audiophile, the G500 makes you feel hardcore. Squeaking into the lead If you really are hardcore, you'll mostly care about the numbers.

Logitech G500

Although Logitech's G500 Gaming Mouse is the cheaper cousin to the company's flagship gaming mouse, the G9x we reviewed in March, we much prefer this simpler rodent. It delivers nearly all the same features, and it's a better fit for our hands. It's not a perfect though: We'd score the G500 even higher if it felt as comfortable as Logitech's wireless Anywhere Mouse MX and used Logitech's new Darkfield laser. We're also not fans of the G500's “battle-worn” finish, which makes the mouse look aged right out of the box. When we first opened our sample, we thought Logitech had sent us a unit that some sweaty product tester had been pounding on for the last six months. Yuck. The only feature the G500 lacks compared to the G9x is the interchangeable snap-on grips designed to accommodate the size of your hand. The G500 isn't styled as aggressively, either. It looks more like a conventional mouse, with a shallow groove on the right side and a deeper one on the left to fit your pinkie and thumb, respectively. The three thumb buttons, however, are mounted further forward than they are on the G9x, a placement we found to be much easier to manipulate.

Logitech Gaming Mouse G500

Logitech might have a firm grasp on luxury mice, but the gaming mouse market is a much more competitive space. We like Logitech's new $70 Gaming Mouse G500 quite a bit, too, but we can't say that we find it an unequivocally better product than its chief competitor at this price, the Microsoft Sidewinder X8. Each mouse offers different strengths. Thanks primarily to a more powerful polling rate, the Logitech G500 will appeal to the more performance-oriented shooter fan. For role-playing and strategy gamers who lean toward less twitchy styles of play, the choice is less obvious. Essentially, the Logitech Gaming Mouse G500 is a revamp of Logitech's G5 Laser Mouse, a CNET Editors' Choice winner and our gaming mouse of choice since its release in 2007. And wisely, Logitech has kept that strong foundation. You still get the customizable weight kit, the comfortable grip, the smartly positioned, customizable buttons, as well as a very high 1,000MHz polling rate in the laser sensor to ensure smooth, accurate cursor tracking. On top of those tried-and-true elements of its mouse formula, Logitech has added some compelling new features to the Gaming Mouse G500.

Product Survey: Mice

The Logitech G500 represents real progress, and its arrival justifies our reclassification of some of its rivals, which, until recently, enjoyed excellent scores. The G500 is taking the place of the G5, and has a new style. The electric blue and cracked black exterior are out, and a new black design that's speckled with grey is in. Is it attractive? Opinions in our lab were divided: it's certainly not neutral enough to meet with universal approval, but Logitech has certainly done a lot better than on the G5. This mixture of greys and blacks has one key benefit though: it matches the rest of our equipment. Your screen and keyboard can be white, grey or black, and the mouse won't stand out next to them ... even if it is all three at once. We were impressed by the work Logitech has done on the materials that cover the mouse. The top quality plastic grips well under the thumb and ring finger on either side, while the top part of the mouse is smooth but dry. There's no problem with sweaty palms, even now at the height of summer. Empty, the G500 weighs 116 grams. For us, that's perfect, but if you prefer a heavier mouse that offers a little inertia, you can add a series of weights until it finally reaches 150 g. We prefer it as it is though.
