Logitech G400s Optical Gaming Mouse

Just as you can't bring a knife to a gunfight, it's similarly unwise to jump into a first-person-shooter (FPS) without packing the right mouse in your holster. The Logitech G400s Optical Gaming Mouse ($59.99 list) is a decent option for FPS enthusiasts, offering a 4,000dpi sensor and a reasonable capacity for customization. That said, better options exist in this price range and are worth exploring before pulling the trigger, so to speak. The G400s's chassis is constructed entirely out of plastic. Its surface isn't decked out with hallucinatory LED lights like the Roccat Kone XTD, and instead opts for a low-key aesthetic that contrasts the palm area's white and gray pattern with an otherwise all-black body. While its design certainly won't turn heads, the G400s's surface nevertheless earns points for cleverly being coated with a hydrophobic layer that prevents unsightly sweat accumulation and fingerprint smudges. A matte-finished plastic material on the G400s's thumb cradle and pinky rest provides a grip, though not as effectively as the coarse texture used in our current Editors' Choice for gaming mice, the Corsair Vengeance M65. At any rate, the G400s's sculpted body and raised profile makes for a fairly comfortable mouse.

Logitech Optical Gaming Mouse G400 review

While a lot of gaming mice can really improve the responsiveness of your games, many of them fall into the trap of being feature-packed, while forgetting to be comfortable to use. This is especially true when you're using the mice for tasks other than gaming. The Logitech Optical Gaming Mouse G400 doesn't have this problem. In fact, it's one of the most comfortable gaming mice we've ever tested. The rounded buttons (in - forgive the pun - sharp contrast to the sometimes uncomfortable harsh oblong buttons of the Rude Gameware Fierce 5000 DPI Laser Gaming Mouse V2) feel comfortable to use, and never rub against your fingers when not in use. There aren't that many of them, so the Logitech G400 Optical Gaming Mouse is certainly not as customisable as the Rude Gameware mouse, or most other mice from SteelSeries, such as the SteelSeries Sensei Pro Grade Laser Mouse. Two buttons either side of the scroll wheel increase and decrease the DPI sensitivity of the mouse on the fly - a great feature that enables us to tweak the sensitivity of the mouse without having to exit, or even pause, the game we were playing.

The G400 looks a lot like the Logitech G500 and, as its name suggests, it's in many ways a skimmed-down version of that model. However, if you're looking for this mouse's closest relation, you need to look to the MX518, once a star model in the Logitech mouse range. In fact, the G400 can either be seen as a souped-up MX518, with a polling rate that's been boosted to 1000 Hz and sensitivity (dpi) that's been doubled, or a slightly lower-spec G500. Take a G500—an excellent mouse that's been hogging the spotlight for the last two years—replace the scroll wheel offering free-wheeling, click-round steps and horizontal clicking with a bog-standard wheel, replace the laser sensor with an LED sensor (which means you'll probably need a mouse mat), ditch the optional weights and the patterned finish and you basically get the G400. The G400 is a basic gaming mouse in which everything has been designed to make a cheaper alternative to the G500, while still maintaining some top-end tech specs. In fact, Logitech has got rid of anything that's not strictly necessary and concentrated on basic performances.
