Linksys EA4500 review
The Linksys EA4500 isn't like a normal router. It's more like a glimpse at the future of networking. The specification list includes dual-band Wireless-N, DLNA certification and support for gigabit Ethernet - although the imminent ratification of 802.11ac does cast a shadow over the EA4500. But its innovation isn't down to the underlying technology. The reason the Linksys EA4500 shifts the game so much is down to its interface. This router supports the Cisco Connect Cloud, which means you can access your router from a website, anywhere you like - at home, at work, or out and about. On top of that it supports apps as well, so you can control your home network using your iPhone or iPad. At the moment there are 12 apps available, six created by Cisco and six more from third parties. These apps cover everything from disconnecting machines from your network and setting up IP cameras, to giving priority to streaming movies and pushing content to your smart TV. There's great potential for more interesting apps as well. Setup is straightforward and performance is solid too, although you'll need dual-band Wireless-N devices to make the most of the wireless network. Admittedly it is on the expensive side of things, and 802.11ac is on the way, but the web interface and apps makes this tempting all the same.
Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router EA4500 review
If you want a robust router for your home network that works so well that once set up you can just forget about it, the Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Router EA4500 is not necessarily for you. This is a router that you will check on regularly, not so much because you have to, but more because you want to. The router is the first in the Linksys EA series that Cisco launched two months ago. It didn't get reviewed until now because the heart of the new series, the Cisco Connect Cloud solution, went live just last week. After playing with the new cloud-based approach to home routers for a few days, I can confidently say that it will change the way you think about networking entirely, mostly for better. Note that this is the review of the Linksys EA4500 router. I did a separate review of the Cisco Connect Cloud solution for home networking that can be found here. The Linksys EA4500 is very similar to the Linksys E4200 v2, boasting a great design, 450Mbps Wi-Fi speed on both 5GHz and 2.4GHz bands, a fast processor for network storage when coupled with an USB external hard drive, and the ability to host up to 50 guest clients.
Cisco Linksys EA4500 App Enabled Dual-Band Wireless Router with Gigabit and USB
The Cisco Linksys EA4500 ($199.99) is the updated version of the Cisco Linksys E4200. While the hardware inside hasn't changed, the EA4500's software has been updated and designed to work with Cisco's upcoming Cloud Connect router software as well as several apps being developed to extend the management capabilities of a home network. The EA400 is certainly a fine router providing easy setup and very good throughput. However, the speeds are not significantly higher than the E4200 v2's; which is expected because the hardware is the same. Even so, whatever updates were added to the EA4500 help it to sustain throughput at longer range than the E4200 v2. While it's a very good router, ome may consider the EA4500 somewhat pricy for what it offers. Its speed isn't much greater than the cheaper Linksys EA3500 and it is not as robust in throughput or range (at least at the 2.4 GHz band) as Netgear's N900 Wireless Dual Band Gigabit Router (WNDR4500). DesignThe EA400 retains the beautiful design of the E4200 v2. The Cisco logo glows when the device is powered up against a black, matte finish, which almost has the feel of suede.
