LG W2363D-PF

I get it. When you're the 100th 23-inch monitor with a black chassis released in the last three months, it's difficult to stand out from the crowd. Sure, you could throw some oddly placed pastels into your design or go all white as some vendors have, but there's an important detail to remember. A good design allows a monitor to showcase its unique look without drawing too much attention to those particulars, less it feels gimmicky. So, is the W2363D-PF's design a cheap contrivance or does its unique feature enhance an already great aesthetic? With so many black-chassis monitor released every year, I'd imagine it's quite difficult to make one black monitor look very different from the next. From just a cursory glace, the 23-inch LG Flatron W2363D-PF looks no different from any other 23-inch monitor with a 3D-compatible screen. That is, until it's powered on. In an effort to have the W2363D-PF stand out from the vast host of black monitors in the market, LG has added an intriguing cylinder to the bottom of the bezel. The cylinder employs LG's Tru Light technology and emits a white LED light that reacts, in real time, to sounds from games, movies, or music generated by the computer it's connected to.

LG W2363D

The LG W2363D ($449.99 list) is more than just another pretty desktop display. Designed with gamers in mind, this 23-inch monitor features 120Hz refresh technology, a speedy 3-ms (g-g) pixel response, full 1920 x 1080 HD clarity, and a nice selection of video inputs. And, it supports Nvidia's 3D Vision technology, which means you can enjoy games and other content in 3D, but you'll have to purchase a 3D Vision Kit separately ($199 list) to do so. The W2363D isn't cheap; it's around $120 more than Samsung's 2233RZ ($399 list, 3 stars), which is also 3D ready, but with the W2363D you get more for your money in terms of input options. My biggest gripe with this monitor has to do with its less than stellar viewing angle performance and frustrating OSD controls. The W2363D is a CCFL backlit monitor, and as such doesn't have a thin profile like many of the latest LED backlit models, such as the HP 2310e ($299.99 list, 3 stars), but it is a good looking display nonetheless. Measuring 2.9 inches thick, the glossy black cabinet sports rounded sides and moderately thin (.75-inch) top and side bezels. The bottom edge measures 2 inches but half of that is a tube-shaped bezel with white caps on each end and an LG logo in the center.

Product Survey: 23'' to 28'' LCD Monitors

LG is the fourth manufacturer to bring out a screen (the Flatron W2363D) that's compatible with NVIDIA's 3D vision technology. Up till now there were just two 22-inch screens (Samsung and ViewSonic) and one 24 inch (). This one's a 23 inch Full HD. Digital ins, VGA, DVI, HDMI, speakers, headpones socket: the LG screeen has the necessary but no surplus that would allow us to score it higher. No card reader, no USB hub, no height adjustable base. Don't forget that the HDMI doesn't yet support 120 Hz so you can't get your 3D through this connector. Default colours suffer from a shift towards blues. Even with the naked eye you won't miss this. Thankfully, you can easily improve things from the screen menu by moving colour temperature from 6500K to sRGB. This sorts out the blues without introducing any other problems and you then get a reduction in the deltaE (colour difference between what's requested by the graphics card and what's produced on screen) to under 3.0, the threshold beyond which the untrained eye won't detect any colour anomalies. In terms of contrast, whether before or after changing the settings, you top out at 800:1, a little below 850:1 which is the average for screens.
