LG E2350V review

A 23-inch monitor with a Full HD 1,920 x 1,080 pixel grid for under £150? Impressive stuff. But that's not all. The brand spankers LG E2350V adds an LED backlight to what already seems like a bonkers bargain.Of course, at this price point, something has to give. That something is the LCD type. Yup, it's a dirty old TN panel. But then so is nearly every other monitor at this price point. The only slight snag for the LG E2350V is that BenQ's new EW2420 delivers both an LED backlight and a larger 24-inch VA panel for less than £10 more.Panel type aside, the LG E2350V packs a solid feature set including HDMI and DVI digital inputs and an extremely compact and light enclosure. The former means it will work with almost any input device from PCs to games consoles and Blu-ray players, while the latter makes it ideal when space is at a premium. At this price point, you might expect grim plastics and shoddy build. After all, this is a big 23-inch panel with a sub-£150 sticker. But the LG E2350V is having none of it. The screen bezel is hewn from fairly funky transparent purple plastic and sports a glossy finish.

LG Flatron E2350V

The LG Flatron E2350V is essentially LG's version of the Samsung SyncMaster XL2370: a thin, 23-inch monitor, with an LED backlight and a minimalist aesthetic design. The E2350V is sleek, although not quite as stylish or unique-looking as the XL2370 or its updated version, the Samsung PX2370, which both stand out thanks to their transparent necks. The E2350V has great games performance, on par with the XL2370 and PX2370; however, the PX2370 has a slight performance edge in movies, because of a seemingly deeper color gamut. Thanks to its black-level control feature, the E2350V has a lower black level than either Samsung monitor, but unfortunately, it also has a dimmer screen than the two. The E2350V's trump card is its lower, $280 price. That's $20 less than the XL2370 and $30 less than the PX2370. The E2350V also has unique features like an ambient light sensor and a headphone jack. If you're looking for an LED monitor, go with the PX2370 because of its superior performance. If price is a concern, however, you can't go wrong with the E2350V. It has the performance, features, and the looks to make it well worth its price.

Product Survey: 23'' to 28'' LCD Monitors

It's difficult not to think that LG's design team hasn't been inspired by Samsung's monitors: the glossy black frame is there, as well as a thin purple strip that reminded us of the one on the series. More surprising, though, is the stand: it can either sit on a regular mount, or fold out to support the monitor like a photo frame. That means you can either use the E2350V as a traditional desktop monitor, or as a secondary display for a laptop, meaning both screens will be at the same height. Everything else is disappointingly traditional though: the standard trio of VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs are all at the back, but there are no speakers. You can recover sound from the HDMI signal and use the headphone jack to listen to it, but it's at the back, so not that easy to use. Our tests confirmed the response time of 5 ms given in LG's documentation. That means the E2350V won't be able to accurately reproduce the rapid movements that are so important for enjoying FPS games. You'll have to stick to using it for desktop activities instead, or for titles that don't need a particularly responsive display like platform or strategy games. If you like online gaming, you'll be glad to know that the input lag is small enough to go unnoticed, so it won't hold you back at your next LAN party.
