LG D2342P Review

Finding content for a 3D television is like trying to find a decent pizza on the west coast. You just have to look too hard. The current selection of 3D Blu-ray discs mostly consists of post-processed garbage, Sony only offers a handful of 3D titles for the PlayStation 3, and Microsoft is sitting 3D out entirely on the Xbox 360 until its future becomes less hazy.Meanwhile, just about any blockbuster PC title can be played in 3D, which makes 3D-capable monitors like LG’s Flatron D2342P a tempting purchase for the 3D early adopter. Call of Duty: Black Ops? Check. Crysis Warhead? Absolutely. Civilization V? Sure, if you really want to rearrange your phalanxes in 3D.The D2342P rises to that need with passive 3D technology (no batteries needed for the glasses) and retails for a reasonable $349.99 — a much smaller investment than your typical 3D TV. Is the D2342P an effective 23-inch gateway drug to the 3D lifestyle as LG hopes? Let’s find out.No shiny holographic logos here. Monitor Reviews: 22''-30'' LCD Displays

Just like it did with its televisions, LG has once again abandoned active 3D in favour of passive technology, and this new Flatron D2342 is the manufacturer's first monitor with a polarised display. It's a 23'' Full HD screen with a TN panel. It has a HDMI 1.4 input, making it compatible with a large number of video sources, as well as on-the-fly conversion if your content is still in 2D. Sounds like it's worth testing! Despite its 3D compatibility, the D2342 doesn't add any inputs or features you wouldn't usually find on an ordinary 2D monitor. There aren't any extras like a USB hub or a card reader, and the only stand only allows users to tilt the display it back a few degrees. In fact, the only way for this monitor to earn any points at all in this section is with its inputs and outputs, which only boil down to VGA, DVI and HDMI connectors and a headphone jack allowing you to pick up the sound that is part of the HDMI signal. The one accessory you will need to enjoy 3D is one of the two pairs of passive 3D glasses that come with the D2342. The first pair is a normal pair of polarised glasses, while the second pair is extra-large so you can wear them on top of ordinary glasses. The advantage of using polarised glasses is obvious: they're lighter, more comfortable, and cheaper because they don't have any electronics and therefore don't need a battery.

LG D2342P Cinema 3D Monitor review

The LG D2342P 23-inch LED backlight display has an FPR (Film Pattern Retarder) filter, which means it can be used with low-cost, passive 3D glasses that appear flicker-free. This is important considering most PC monitors are used in environments with a high level of ambient light, usually from a multitude of different sources. What's more, the loss of 3D resolution characteristic of an FPR screen matters far less here than on a large screen TV, because it's harder to perceive. The screen looks much like any other widescreen PC monitor. It has a thin, glossy black bezel and is just 5.7cm deep (although it bulges at the rear). There are no speakers, but you do get a headphone jack. This PC Cinema 3D screen works rather well. Tron: Legacy is a challenging 3D Blu-ray, yet this LG does a grand job of giving it depth. The caveat is that there is a very narrow sweet spot available to enjoy crosstalk free 3D. Move off axis, particularly vertically, and double imaging spills across the picture. The D2342P may lack a TV tuner, but it does sport an HDMI input, as well as PC D-Sub and DVI-D inputs, making it easy to use with 3D Blu-ray players and games consoles. The passive 3D glasses used with this set are lightweight and comfortable.

LG Cinema 3D D2342P review

Not content with rewriting the TV rulebook with its Cinema 3D TVs, LG is now deploying its low-cost passive 3D screen tech in the PC monitor field. The 23-inch LG Cinema 3D D2342P is available now for around £230.First-generation 3D PC monitors built around Nvidia's 3D Vision system use the same active shutter gubbins found in the majority of flatscreen TVs. This means bulky and expensive shuttering glasses are required to create a 3D effect. Cinema 3D is rather different. Any old 3D specs looted from your local multiplex will do the job. LG includes one pair of glasses in the box, along with polarising clip-ons for spectacle wearers. These 3D glasses and clip-ons come in the box, but any old cinema pair will work just fine. The display is a 23-inch LED-backlit LCD. It sits, rather precariously, on a small pedestal stand with a 15-degree recline. Design-wise it's generic but smart. The monitor has a lightweight, plasticky construction, albeit with a pleasingly thin bezel. The only embellishment is a bright blue illuminated power button at the bottom right. It sits next to a fistful of small buttons that access the main menu 3D and Eco display settings.
