The OfficeEdge Pro5500 is an all-in-one inkjet colour printer for small and medium-sized businesses with printing volumes of 500 to 1,500 pages per month. It is the mid-range instalment in Lexmark's OfficeEdge series. With new printheads and cartridges, Lexmark is advertising professional-quality prints, high speeds, half the cost per page and lower ink and paper consumption. The OfficeEdge Pro5500 is sober, yet elegant, and runs the gamut of features. Like its predecessors, it features a touchscreen and online capability that enable it to perform tasks without even the use of a computer via a wide range of apps that can be downloaded from Lexmark SmartSolutions. This compact printer (30 x 50 x 42.7 cm / 16 kg) performs each of the functions you expect from an all-in-one: printing, copying, scanning and faxing, with a double-sided printing option for each. The 126 MB of standard memory allow for convenient sharing within a group of 20 employees, and the PCL and PostScript support make it compatible with most computing environments. Not only does the touchscreen un-clutter the machine, it also makes it extremely user-friendly.
The Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro5500 Color MFP ($399 direct, 4 stars) is the flagship model of the company's new line of business inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs). Lexmark claimed that the OfficeEdge line would bring fast speed, vivid output, low running costs, and workflow improvements. The Pro5500 mostly delivers on its promises, and should be on the short list for small or home businesses looking for a color MFP; it can even give lasers a run for their money. The matte-black Pro5500 measures 11.8 by 19.7 by 16.8 inches (HWD) and weighs 34.7 pounds. Apart from the on-off switch, the front panel has no physical buttons but includes a 4.3-inch color touch screen display. This MFP can print, scan, copy, and fax. It can scan to a network or to e-mail. It has a 50-sheet duplexing automatic document feeder (ADF) for feeding one- or two-sided multi-page documents for copying, faxing, or scanning, and a legal-sized flatbed. The Pro5500 has a port for a USB thumb drive as well as a media-card slot. The Pro5500 has a single paper tray with a 300-sheet capacity, which should be fine for micro or home offices as well as many small offices. An automatic duplexer, for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper, comes standard.
The Lexmark OfficeEdge Pro5500 color inkjet multifunction printer is one of the most convincing alternatives to a low-cost color laser printer that I’ve seen to date. Designed to serve a small workgroup of two to five people, it is expensive for an inkjet, priced at $399 (as of January 30, 2012) compared to $299 for its current closest competitor, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One. However, Lexmark's MFP is speedy even at scanning (a common bottleneck), and it overflows with paper-handling and productivity features, including USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi connectivity. Its ink costs are also cheap overall, especially compared with those of any low-cost color laser. Any business inkjet had better be fast. The OfficeEdge Pro5500 one-ups the competition by being fast in scanning as well as printing. In our tests it photocopied a simple text document at a brisk speed of 6 pages per minute. When it came to our hardest scanning test, which uses a full-page color photo, the OfficeEdge Pro5500 took just 68 seconds--one of the fastest scan times we've seen here. Print speeds were also very fast, and in one case they were record-setting.
