The Interact S605 is Lexmark's top-of-the-range wireless all-in-one inkjet printer. It separates itself from the rest of the models in the range by including a large touchscreen display. The printer can be picked up for around £180 online. Setting the S605 up is very straightforward, as long as you pay heed to the warnings to put the installation CD in your computer before you do anything else. The CD runs an installation wizard, complete with video, to guide you through the entire process, from taking the protective tapes off the printer, to installing cartridges and printing the align page. The steps are also shown on the printer's touchscreen, so you can't really go far wrong. The printer uses Lexmark's Vizix printing system, incorporating four separate cartridges: a large black one, plus three half-sized cartridges for yellow, blue and magenta. The cartridges are easy to install, but, initially, it can be tricky to tell whether they've connected properly. We found that setting up Wi-Fi was a breeze. Unlike many rival models, you don't have to first connect the printer up to a computer via USB. Instead, you can do it right from the touch panel. You simply select your network from the list and then enter the password using the on-screen keyboard.
The Lexmark Interact S605 ($199.99 direct) is a multifunction printer (MFP) geared mainly to home-office use. It can print from and scan to multiple sources, and works as a standalone scanner, copier, and Web-enabled printer (and has a sweet color touch screen to aid you in these things). The S605 has limited paper capacity and lacks Ethernet and fax functionality, but it should make a good addition to many home offices with light-duty needs, and can double as a home printer. The S605 can print, copy, and scan - you can scan to your PC, to a memory device, or to e-mail; it will open your e-mail client and attach the scan to a message. It can print from Lexmark's SmartSolutions Web apps, a memory card, or a USB key. The S605 is matte black with a silver bezel surrounding the lid. It measures 7 by 14.2 by 20.1 inches, and weighs 16.5 pounds. The front panel houses a handsome 4.3-inch color touch screen, from which one can scan, copy, print from external media, or access Web apps. This MFP comes with just two SmartSolutions Web apps installed - ID Card Copy and Photo Reprint - but it's easy enough to activate your printer online and download a range of free apps from Lexmark's SmartSolutions site.
The Lexmark Interact S605 color inkjet multifunction printer avoids being just another $200 (as of May 22, 2010) printer/scanner/copier by including a 4.3-inch color LCD touchscreen for its control panel (think iPod Touch or iPhone). Unfortunately, that embellishment doesn't fully compensate for the machine's pricey inks and other shortcomings. Overall, the HP Officejet 6500 Wireless is a better deal in the same price range. The Interact S605's 4.3-inch touchscreen control panel is its standout feature. Not only does the touchscreen look great, but Lexmark did an excellent job with its icons and menu structure, making it intuitive, easy to navigate, and well thought out. The touchscreen also gives the machine a cleaner look than a raft of buttons would. Automatic duplexing (two-sided printing) is the other big plus. But otherwise, the Interact S605's features are unremarkable: There is no automatic document feeder, just a letter-size flatbed scanner. The rear, vertical input try holds a scant 100 sheets, and the front output area accommodates 25 sheets. Media slots support MS/MMC, SD, and xD card; there is a USB/PictBridge port as well.
Lexmark used to give inkjet printing a bad name, serving up cheap, flimsy models that only ran for a few days on their 'installation' cartridges before needing replacements, which would often cost more than the original purchase price of the printer itself. The S605 represents a major rethink, ditching the tri-colour cartridges originally favoured by Lexmark and ushering in a single print head unit, fed by individually replaceable ink tanks – more in line with Canon and Epson printers. And while you can connect the S605 to your PC or Mac via a conventional USB hook-up, it really comes into its own as a standalone, Wi-Fi connected all-in-one printer, complete with one-touch Smart Solutions that you can download from the Internet. At the heart of the S605 lies a 4800 x 1200dpi print engine running a conventional four-colour CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) range of inks. This makes it first and foremost a document printer although it does a surprisingly good job of photo output as well, as we'll come to later. All-in-one frippery includes a built-in 1200 x 2400dpi scanner, which – while not offering the ultra-high 4800 x 9600dpi maximum resolution of some competing models like the Canon PIXMA MP640 – still gives plenty of scope for enlarging small sections of original documents or photos.
Even if we're not fully convinced that touch screens belong on printers, the Lexmark Interact S605 is the most convincing printer we've tested to include a functional, easy-to-use interactive LCD. Home users and small businesses will also appreciate its ability to churn out professional quality graphic and text documents with speeds rivaling pro laser printers that cost much more than the $200 Interact. As long as you don't expect it to produce kiosk-quality photo prints, the Lexmark Interact S605 is a worthwhile purchase. Design and Features The current line of Lexmark printers is the first to adopt its new, simpler nomenclature and also features a complete redesign. The Interact's chassis looks almost identical to its less expensive linemate, the Lexmark Impact S305, with an unassuming silhouette and a perforated scanner cover that adds flair to the otherwise straightforward device. A folding paper tray behind the printer feeds paper into the device that runs through the spooling process and exits out of an extendable tray at the bottom lip. The 100-page paper input tray is open to a variety of media sizes from letter to legal to envelope thanks to an adjustable arm that corrals incoming sheets before they enter the printer.
Lexmark has changed everything on this WiFi printer – for the better. So much so that it's now our favourite multifunction inkjet. The printing speed has increased, the quality, especially of photos, has improved. A large, responsive, user-friendly touchscreen has replaced the traditional cluster of buttons, AND – we saved the best for last – this is a smart printer. The S605's home screen: the green leaf activates the eco mode. The new functions are grouped together under the Smart Solutions button on the right. Press the icon and a new menu pops up: For example, we added an Archive function for our invoices. Now all we do is slip the paper invoice into the scanner part, press the button, and away it goes – the printer digitises the document, converts it to PDF format, and saves it to a designated folder on PC or Mac, without any further input from us to the printer or the computer. It even names the file itself based on the date. Minimum hassle, maximum efficiency! Here's another example: we can scroll through the meetings in our Google calendar, or our site's news, right on the screen, either automatically when the printer goes into standby mode or manually via a new dedicated button on the touchscreen.
