If you glance over a list of Lexmark printers, or have seen my review of the Editors' Choice Lexmark T650n ($749 direct, ) the first thing you might wonder when you see the Lexmark E462dtn ($749 direct) is why Lexmark is selling two monochrome laser printers for the same price. Both are aimed at small offices and workgroups, both are reasonably fast, and both offer more than acceptable output quality. So why have two distinct models? The answer is simple enough, but you have to do some fine hair splitting of categories to get there. The T650n is the low-end version of a model series that's aimed at small to medium-size offices and workgroups. The E462dtn is the high-end version of a series that's aimed more at micro to small, and, to a lesser extent, medium-size offices and workgroups. The T650n and E462dtn represent the price level where the two series overlap. Not surprisingly, there are several important differences between the two printers, but the key distinction is in their paper handling. Lexmark offers lots of options you can add to the T650n, making it suitable for heavy-duty printing even by high-end SMB standards. The E462dtn, on the other hand, has all the paper handling you can get for it already included.
