Lexmark C748de

The $1199 (as of July 30, 2012) Lexmark C748de is among the fastest color laser printer we've tested, and its output is second to none. The unit's 1200-by-1200-dpi print engine resolution plays a major role in achieving such high-quality prints: Photos are reminiscent of an inkjet's ( a good thing), and text is both supersharp and superblack. Toner costs are quite good, too, though cartridges are available only in high-volume sizes--as befits a corporate printer for large workgroups that has a capacity expandable to 4300 pages. Setting up the C748de is a breeze. The HTML Web interface and printer dialog areas are competently rendered, and the machine comes with both PCL and PostScript drivers. The front panel includes a numeric keypad for entering passwords and passcodes for secure print jobs, as well as a 4.3-inch touchscreen control panel. The touchscreen is easy to read, but regrettably Lexmark recessed it too far into the unit: The scroll bar and other graphical elements are uncomfortably close to the edge of the screen, and the surrounding lip makes touching them slightly awkward. Aside from that drawback, the C748de is very easy to use. The C748de seems sturdily built.

The Lexmark C748de is a single-function colour laser printer that advertises dazzling colours for medium- to large-sized businesses, super-high speeds thanks to an 800 MHz processor and configurable eco-friendly features that reduce energy consumption. This tall, grey printer measures 43.5 x 40 x 45.5 cm, for a weight of 25.6 kilos. The commands are done via a comfortable and responsive 10.9 cm touchscreen, a numerical keypad and a handful of physical buttons. The interface is simple, clear and user-friendly. The 512 MB of standard RAM allow for convenient Ethernet sharing within a group of 50 co-workers. While it features double-sided printing and PS3 and PCL6 compatibility, you can forget about Wi-Fi and card readers. There's only one 550-sheet paper tray in the standard configuration, but extra trays can be added for businesses that print on multiple paper types. With the additional trays the maximum capacity jumps to 4,300 sheets. Take a look inside and you'll see that the four colour toner slots are rather bulky, taking up most of the machine's height. Lexmark is advertising 33 pages per minute (ppm) in both colour and B&W.

The Lexmark C748de ($1,199 direct) provides decent speed and voluminous standard and optional paper capacity as a color laser printer for a small office or workgroup. Its output quality, though a bit below par, was still good enough for internal business use. The C748de is a towering gray-and-white machine that measures 17.9 by 17.1 by 15.7 inches (HWD) and weighs 56 pounds—moving it into place is a two-person job. Set in the front bezel is a 4.3-inch color touch screen, which lets you preview documents and print jobs, access shortcuts and pre-loaded Lexmark solutions. Not far from the touch screen is an alphanumeric keypad. A front USB port lets you print from a thumb drive. The C748de has a standard paper capacity of 650 sheets, split between a 550-sheet tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. You can add an optional 2,000-sheet tray plus additional 550-sheet trays to bring the maximum paper capacity to 4,300 sheets. This printer comes standard with an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. It provides USB and Ethernet connectivity; I tested it over an Ethernet connection with a computer running Windows Vista.
