Lenovo ThinkVision L2251x Wide

Lenovo has come out with its latest eco-friendly display, the Lenovo ThinkVision L2251x Wide ($299.99 direct). Not only is this feature-rich, 22-inch LED backlit monitor a power miser, it's free of toxic materials such as mercury and arsenic and uses recycled materials in its cabinet and packaging. It's also the first display to win a TCO-Certified Edge award, which acknowledges products that exceed the normal TCO ecological and performance quality standards. If you work with documents or spend a lot of time reading online content you'll appreciate this monitor's excellent text readability, but its price tag is on the high side for this class of monitor, and its grayscale performance is subpar. The L2251x's 1,680-by-1,050 TN+ panel is housed in a business-black cabinet meant to compliment Lenovo's ThinkVison line of ThinkPad and ThinkCentre products. Extremely thin (5/8-inch) bezels frame the sides of the screen, but the bottom bezel is wider (1 inch) to accommodate five buttons on the right side of the cabinet. A Webcam and microphone array jut out of the upper bezel just above the silver Lenovo badge. The screen is supported by a half-round base featuring a telescoping mounting arm that offers height, tilt, and swivel adjustability.

Lenovo ThinkVision L2251x Wide

The Lenovo ThinkVision L2251x Wide can be found for as low as $278 from major online retailers. The monitor provides good performance in games, movies, and general tasks and includes a plethora of ergonomic options. Users looking for extras will be pleased by the built-in Webcam and microphone, as well as the multiple USB ports. Unfortunately, the monitor includes limited video connection options. VGA and DisplayPort are your only choices, so if you prefer a digital connection--and unless you have a DisplayPort compatible Video Card--you'll need to invest in an adapter. The Lenovo ThinkVision L2251x Wide is a well-performing monitor with a pleasing assortment of features that unfortunately will require an additional investment for most. The 22-inch Lenovo ThinkVision L2251x Wide has a medium gray chassis with a matte finish. The bezel is short--0.6 inch wide on the right and left sides, and the panel measures 1 inch in depth. The back of the display--which houses the connection options and ventilation system--extends the panel another 1.1 inch, bringing the full monitor depth to about 2.1 inches. On the top of the bezel, in the center, sits a built-in Webcam and microphone.

Product Survey: 22'' LCD Monitors

The stand is a good start, as it's height adjustable, rotates and also allows the display the be pivoted round to portrait mode. The bezel takes up the baton, with a three-port USB hub, a webcam and a mic all built-in. It's connectivity that's lacking, with just one VGA input and a single DisplayPort at the back. We would have preferred a HDMI connector, especially given that DisplayPort hasn't exactly taken off as an output for graphics cards: that means for a lot of people, VGA will be the only option. Our tests confirmed what we already knew: this is a 5 ms monitor. That means it won't be able to keep up with all of the games you want to try. Any that have particularly fast movement risk lacking fluidity. It will, on the other hand, be perfectly at home for office tasks. The almost total lack of input lag also made us wish for a better response time: with such little lag, it could have been great for multiplayer games. Under the factory settings, the colours are all wrong: whites are too red and greys are too blue for instance. A rather unfortunate division of luminance across different shades of grey was also visible, and it wasn't something we managed to fix. We ended up with a deltaE score that was bad as when we got it out of the box: 6.0.
