Lacie Network Space 2

If you prefer form over function in a NAS, you may appreciate Lacie's Network Space 2 NAS device. It has a unique design—a high-gloss black box with port connections placed discreetly on its sides and no LEDs. The only light on the device is one on bottom of the unit that is color-coded to indicate the device's status. When all is well with the Network Space 2, the light emits a deep blue color which offers a nice contrast against the chic, polished box. Most of us, however, don't need a NAS to be pretty. Looks are nice, but what we really want is good I/O performance, a sharp interface, and a robust feature set, all at a decent price. Unfortunately, the Network Space is lacking in all but the last of that list (it's reasonably priced). Although it's better than the last LaCie NAS I reviewed, the LaCie Wireless Space, Lacie's developers would do better to focus less on how the device looks and more on its functionality. Design and HardwareThe Network Space 2 only has NAS functionality and no included wireless router capability (as did the earlier-reviewed Wireless Space device). It has a single, fixed drive, so that means no RAID functionality. It ships in two models: 1TB priced at $160 and 2TB at $200. I tested the 1TB model.

LaCie Network Space 2 Review

We review the LaCie Network Space 2 which makes a fine consumer-level NAS for the most basic NAS needs.Of all the tech appliances you might want to prominently display, a mundane network attached storage device probably falls about 78th on most people’s lists, right after VoIP desk phones and before network switches. LaCie’s Network Space 2 may change that. The attractive 1TB NAS sports an exterior design as clean and intuitive as the software that runs it. As we found out, it’s also just as basic as its shape – but entry-level consumers might not mind the lack of high-end features or Formula One performance. On the surface, the Network Space 2 is merely a hard drive you plug into a network to access it from a number of machines – a networked attached storage devices (NAS) in its most basic form. But its feature set does extend a bit beyond merely providing a shared pool of files between computers.Because it includes a USB cable, the Network Space 2 can act like a portable USB drive, allowing you to physically cart files from place to place where networks may reach.

LaCie Network Space 2 NAS server

The LaCie Network Space 2 is a simple single-volume NAS server. It's one of a few that can also work as an external hard drive. The biggest appeal of the device is the fact that it, like many other products from LaCie, looks good. It's also easy to set up and use. The NAS server performed OK in our tests and doesn't have much to offer in terms of features. If you're looking for a simple network storage device, at around $180, the LaCie Network Space 2 will get the job done. However, those who want more features, such as remote access over the Internet, should also check out the similarly priced Western Digital My Book World Edition. Design The Network Space 2 takes the shape of a super-sleek-looking black brick. On its front is a type-A female USB port to host a USB external storage device or a printer. This isn't an ideal or convenient position for this port, especially if you're looking to hook up something to it permanently. Also on the front is the device's very trendy bottom-facing blue light. This light indicates the power status of the device as well as the activities of the hard drive. Solid blue means the device is powered on and ready, and flashing blue means the hard drive is working.
