LaCie 5big 20TB review

The Lacie 5big drive marries five hard disks in a 20TB volume which, thanks to the capabilities of Thunderbolt, work together at wildly fast speeds. In tests with very small files, the drive performs about as well as Western Digital's two-disk, 10,000rpm Velociraptor Duo. With larger data, the 5big streaks ahead to peaks of 777.7MB/second and 634.9MB/ second in sequential read and write tests. The first figure is near LaCie's quoted 785MB/second, although the second is further below the expected 695MB/second. Hard disk performances fluctuate, but the 5big's average read and write speeds of 569.1MB/second and 490.1MB/second remain respectable. In the tougher random read and write tests, we observed average read and write speeds of 367.8MB/second and 348.9MB/second, respectively. These are within 20MB/second of the peak in these tests, meaning the 5big is more consistent in difficult conditions, and still acceptably fast. The drive uses OS X's software RAID technology, which limits it to basic striped and mirrored configurations.

LaCie 5big Network 2 NAS 5TB

The LaCie 5Big Network 2 offers a lot of features and capacity for comparatively little cash: $900 (as of March 23, 2012) for 5TB. And despite the unit's extremely large blue status button (or maybe because of it), the 5Big Network 2 is quite a bit better looking than most NAS boxes. Regrettably, though, it delivers slow, barely consumer-grade performance. Unlike its 2Big Network 2 cousin, the 5Big Network 2 does not attach directly to PCs, so you won't find a type B USB port. LaCie does supply a wide complement of other ports, however: two USB 2.0 ports, two ethernet ports (supporting failover and aggregation), and two eSATA ports. The five drive bays are accessible from the back via slide-out trays, which lock in place with thumb-screw mechanisms. The bays are numbered, which comes in handy when you're configuring the drive. Another amenity is the unit's fail-safe power switch, which initiates a safe shutdown, not a sudden power-off. The 5Big Network 2 has all of the essential software features for network-attached storage: file sharing, iTunes and DLNA compliant media serving, backup, online backup, and Rsync for synchronizing the box with remote servers. The interface is nicely rendered and--with the exception of having to hit the home button to back out of sections--easy to use.

LaCie 5Big Network 2 Professional 5-bay RAID Server

After taking a look at LaCies’ 2big Network 2 LaCie has sent us their 5big Network 2. Lets take a look at some of the differences between the 2big Network 2 and the 5big Network 2. Like the 2Big Network 2 the 5Big Network 2 runs LaCies’ NAS 2.0 OS so we expect similar functionality along the software side. We do see some upgrades in hardware compared to the 2Big Network 2 including iSCSI target support, dual Ethernet ports, and 2x the SATA and USB Connections. Just like we saw with the 2Big Network 2, LaCie does an awesome job with packaging. Everything is firmly packed and the NAS itself sits about 1/2 and inch from the bottom of the box. I have no doubt this packaging could withstand any shipping pains it is put through. thumbs 100 0259 LaCie 5Big Network 2 Professional 5 bay RAID ServerThe NAS itself also has a Black Fabric bag as well as a plastic bag covering it. A little over the top? Yes. But I’m not complaining, a scratch on this would be devastating.
