The Kodak P461 Personal Photo Scanner ($139.99 direct) is both literally and metaphorically an extended version of the Kodak P460 Personal Photo Scanner ($109.99 direct, 3.5 stars) that I recently reviewed. The metaphorical extension is the added ability to scan slides, which leads to the literal extension in width, with a second scan slot added for 35mm film, including both slides and strips of negatives. Beyond that, the P461 offers essentially the same features as its smaller cousin, including the ability to scan prints at up to 4 by 6 inches and the ability to scan to a memory card with no computer needed. The P461 also shares the P460's approach to scanning, which serious photographers may find annoying, since the scanner chooses almost all of its settings automatically. But more casual, aka consumer-level, photographers will appreciate how easy the P461 makes scanning, especially given the ability to scan prints, slides, and negatives. At 2 by 10.6 by 2.8 inches (HWD), the P461 is about the size of a three-hole punch. It offers two manual-feed slots in the front, with a four-inch-wide slot for prints on the left and a small slot for slides and film on the right. Both offer straight-through paths, with the exit in the back.
