Kodak Hero 9.1 All-in-One

The $250 Hero 9.1 is Kodak's newest flagship printer with do-it-all features including a fax machine, a 4.3-inch touch screen, and dual paper trays, and for only $50 more than its linemate, the Kodak Office Hero 6.1. Competing models from HP, Canon, and Lexmark offer similar features to the 9.1 at the $250 price point, but Kodak sweetens the deal with its new e-mail print feature that lets you send jobs from any Web-based device. Despite its minor setbacks like a smaller paper input capacity than the 6.1 and average print speeds, the Kodak Hero 9.1 remains a smart all-in-one device for getting work done quickly and efficiently in the home or office, and I recommend it to anyone shopping for a do-it-all device. The Kodak Hero 9.1 does away with the tactile keypad and speed-dial buttons that gave the 6.1 its business-friendly productivity. This one has an adjustable 4.3-inch touch-screen display with a slim profile that matches the chiseled angles and alternating glossy black, silver, and perforated matte black finish of the whole machine. In fact, if you don't necessarily need the buttons, I don't see why graphic designers and general offices wouldn't be satisfied with its aesthetic.

Kodak Hero 9.1 All-in-One Printer

The $250 (as of December 7, 2011) Kodak Hero 9.1 color inkjet multifunction printer is $50 more expensive than the Office Hero 6.1, but this more home-oriented MFP didn't fare as well in our hands-on evaluations. Our test unit produced the same excellent photos as the Office Hero did; this model also uses the same inexpensive inks, and it adds an easy-to-use and attractive 4.3-inch color touchscreen to the mix. Unfortunately, it also suffered from some construction quirks that its cousin did not. In our tests, issue number one was that we couldn't lift the scanner unit to change the ink cartridges and access the upper paper path. The latch was stuck. After we made several attempts involving some extra force, it worked fine. We’ve never had to wear down a part like this to get it to work right. And although the Hero 9.1 survived our speed testing without a hitch, it jammed twice within an hour or so of hands-on use. Nearly all printed pages had a tiny dimple or bite in the same location along the lead edge of the sheet. While a printer's paper mechanism may leave a very small nick where it grabs the edge, obviously a jam is an undesirable outcome. Kodak is sending us a replacement unit to double-check.

Kodak Hero 9.1 review

The Kodak Hero 9.1 is Google Cloud Print ready, can print from emails and also output directly from mobile devices using a free app. It offers Wi-Fi, Ethernet and USB connectivity and has a 4.3-inch touchscreen. Kodak claims that although its printers cost a little more than its rivals, low ink prices make them cost effective over time. This top-of-the-range Hero 9.1 all-in-one printer is packed with features and priced at £200 in the UK, or $250 in the US. But with costs falling across the board, can it match the print quality of rivals such as the Canon Pixma MG5250, Epson Stylus Office BX625FWD, HP Photosmart 7510 and other multifunction devices in our Best inkjet printers list? The Kodak Hero 9.1 is at the high end of Kodak's new Hero range of home and small office multifunction inkjet printers. The entry-level model, the Hero 5.1 (full price £99), offers wireless printing and scanning, a 2.4-inch display and automatic Duplex. The more office-orientated Kodak Hero 6.1 (which has an RRP of £169) adds fax facilities, a 35-page automatic document feeder (ADF) for scanning and photocopying and a larger 200-sheet paper tray that also holds 70 pages of photo paper.

Kodak HERO 9.1 All-in-One Printer

Given that the Kodak HERO 9.1 All-in-One Printer ($249.99 direct) is Kodak's new flagship MFP model, you'd expect it to offer more than any of its siblings. For the most part it does, with a big color touch screen for its front panel added to all the features you'll find in the Kodak Office HERO 6.1 All-in-One Printer ($199.99 direct, 4 stars). Well, almost all. The few missing features make the HERO 9.1 a little less appropriate for office use. It's still a good fit as a home printer, however, or for the dual role of home and home office printer for light-duty printing. The HERO 9.1 supports Ethernet and Wi-Fi for easy sharing on a network, and it can print, scan, and fax, even over a network, as well as print in duplex (on both sides of the page). It also works as a standalone copier, fax machine, and direct email sender and can scan to a memory card or USB memory key. Photocentric features include the ability to print directly from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, and USB memory keys, and preview photos on its 4.3-inch color LCD before printing. The LCD is also a touch screen control panel. More important, the menus are designed well enough so it's self-explanatory and easy to use.

Kodak Hero 9.1 review

The Kodak Hero 9.1 is the top-of-the-range, consumer-focused model in Kodak's new line-up of printers. Its headline features include double-sided printing, colour touchscreen control, a dedicated photo paper tray and Wi-Fi and Ethernet support. You can buy it direct form Kodak's online store for £200. The Kodak Hero 9.1 follows pretty closely the design aesthetic of the three previous Hero models. The chassis is essentially a big rectangle that's finished in gloss and matte black. However, Kodak has also added a brushed metal effect to the two plastic panels on either side of the paper tray as well as an attractive red highlight that runs along the edge of the scanner lid. It all adds up to quite a premium look. The Kodak Hero 9.1 has a premium look. The premium feel is further enhanced by this model's 4.3-inch touchscreen. This is huge compared to most other printers on the market and is a real boon when it comes to selecting pictures that you want to print from this model's front-mounted memory card reader or USB port. It also makes setting up and using the printer a cinch. For example, when you're configuring Wi-Fi on the printer, there's a full Qwerty keyboard displayed onscreen, making it speedy to enter you network password.

Kodak Hero 9.1 Review

The Kodak Hero 9.1 is the brand’s new flagship desktop printer, topping a range of less-equipped, less-expensive models including the Hero 3.1, 5.1, 6.1, and 7.1. The Hero 9.1 comes complete with trendy features like 3D printing (the paper glasses kind), a 4.3-inch touchscreen, 30-page automatic document feeder, and the usual multi-function features including scanning, copying, printing, and fax. The entire Hero line offers access to mobile printing options including Google Cloud Print, Kodak Email print, and Kodak’s Pic Flick iPhone app. Despite having all the bells and whistles of a fully connected, multi-function printer, the Hero 9.1 doesn’t quite measure up because of some user-unfriendly glitches, loud processing, and connection issues.Kodak has staked its reputation on the affordability of its printer ink and ease of use, so it isn’t terrible surprising that the design isn’t the manufacturer’s first priority. The Hero 9.1 is far and away more stylish than many Kodak printers, but it’s still a bit clunkier and more awkward than competitors from Canon and HP.The Hero 9.1 sports an ever-present touchscreen that doesn’t fold into the printer, instead angling out over your input and output trays at all times.
