Kodak ESP 7250 review

According to Kodak's claims, the ESP 7250 can save the average user up to £75 per year on ink, based on a 'typical' annual print volume of 150 6x4-inch photos, 800 text pages and 550 mixed text and colour graphics pages. Or as Kodak's US website puts it, the printer "saves you a ton of money on ink". That's refreshing news to anyone who's ever bought a cheap inkjet printer, only to find that the cartridges run out a few days later and a replacement set costs almost as much as a whole new printer. But there's nothing cheap about the ESP 7250, which costs twice as much to buy as models like the excellent (though non-Wi-Fi) Canon PIXMA MG5150, or the Wi-Fi enabled Lexmark Interact S605.Think Kodak and you're probably thinking photos. However, like other current Kodak printers including the ESP 9250 (which includes standalone fax functions), the ESP 7250 is built for general-purpose document printing as well as for photographic output. There are six inks in all, and while photo printing runs on a five-ink line-up, it's notably different from the typical pigment-based black and dye-based CMYK arrangement used in most Canon printers and the HP Photosmart Premium.

Reviews: Multifunction Printers

Kodak breaks with the standard model here and has given us an expensive printer but one that is economical to use. It's therefore aimed at those who get through a lot of ink. This all-in-one inkjet ESP7250 is at the high-end of Kodak's range. Designed for printing photos and office documents, its positioning highlights its capacity to print straight from an iPad or iPhone. A trend that has taken root across the HP range. It prints, scans and copies in Wi-Fi mode and networking is compatible with iPhones, iPads and the iPhone touch. Nor do you necessarily need to link it up to your computer as there's a card reader on the front of the machine. With a 6.1 cm colour screen that you control with a scroll, navigation through the menus is fairly simple and intuitive. Two paper loaders at the front of the printer allow for easy loading of photo paper (up to 40 sheets) and office documents (maximum of 100 sheets). There are two separate cartridges, one for black and the other for colour. : We are unfortunately quite some way off the pace of the speeds announced in the manufacturer tech spec. On our test documents, we timed it at 6 pages per minute (ppm) for colour docs, whereas Kodak is claiming 30 ppm.

Kodak ESP 7250 All-In-One Printer

Recent Kodak multifunction printers (MFPs) we've tested, such as the ESP 5250 ($149 direct, ), have combined a mix of home and home-office features. The Kodak ESP 7250 All-in-One Printer ($199.99 direct) continues that tradition, though in this particularly model, it clearly leans toward the home side. Solid text quality and an automatic duplexer give it some business cred, but not enough to recommend it for anything but the lightest business use. Photo printing is where the 7250 really shines, both in terms of output quality and the features it delivers. As an MFP, the ESP 7250 prints, scans, and copies, both connected to a computer and as a standalone device. It has no fax capabilities. In addition to being able to print from a computer, it can print JPEGs from a PictBridge-enabled camera, a USB key, or a memory card (it supports most standard formats). It can also print directly from a WiFi-enabled BlackBerry or from an iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad with Kodak's Pic Flick app. (You can also print from any Bluetooth device with an optional $49.99 Bluetooth interface.) The 7250's tilt-up front panel has a 2.4-inch color LCD that can be used for navigating the simple menu system or selecting photos for printing out.

Kodak ESP 7250

The Kodak ESP 7250 color inkjet multifunction printer offers home and student users a fun assortment of features for a midrange price ($200 as of May 26, 2010). Its low ink costs are appealing, but this MFP is otherwise an average performer. The ESP 7250 is easy to use from the get-go. You can install it via USB, ethernet, or Wi-Fi; and completing the driver and network installation processes takes just a handful of clicks each. The driver's photo enhancement capabilities are particularly nice, allowing you to tweak image colors without resorting to profiles. Kodak's comprehensive Home Center printing, copying, and scanning software is as good-looking as it is capable. The ESP 7250's control panel is practical and clean. Menus and photos appear on the 2.4-inch color LCD, and you navigate through them by using a four-way rocker button. All of the buttons on the panel are clearly labeled. Though fun features abound on the ESP 7250, the MFP's basics are limited. A 40-sheet photo input tray piggybacks onto the main tray--a nice convenience--and the standard automatic duplexer helps you save paper by printing on both sides (not with photo paper, of course). Using Kodak's Pic Flick app (a free download from PCWorld's AppGuide), you can print photos from an iPod Touch or iPhone on the ESP 7250.
