Kodak ESP 5250 review

Kodak's ESP 5250 is a compact all-in-one printer that includes scanning and copying features, as well as integrated Wi-Fi. Kodak also claims that it's one of the cheapest inkjet printers around in terms of running costs. You can pick it up for about £70. The 5250's body is made entirely from plastic, with a slightly textured, dotted pattern used on the lid, and glossy highlighting on the front and top control panel. There's also a flash of yellow -- Kodak's corporate colour -- used on the edge of the scanner lid. The right-hand side of the top of the printer is home to a flip-up, 2.4-inch colour screen along with the various buttons to help you navigate through the easy-to-use menus. The printer's card reader supports SD and Memory Stick media, but it doesn't have a PictBridge-compatible USB port for directly attaching a camera -- something found on some other models in the Kodak range. The 5250 can be connected to your computer either via Wi-Fi or a standard USB lead. The Wi-Fi connection is very easy to set up. Unlike the Kodak ESP C310 and ESP Office 2170, the 5250 uses Kodak's 10-series cartridges. There are two distinct cartridges: one black one and one that contains five ink colours.

Kodak ESP 5250 All-In-One Printer

The difference between home and home office multi-function printers (MFPs) keeps getting less and less clear. Where there was once a bright line (as lawyers like to call it) between the two, there's now a wide fuzzy gray area. Few printers make that point as well as the Kodak ESP 5250 All-In-One Printer ($149.99 direct). Kodak clearly designed the 5250 primarily as a home MFP. Unlike office MFPs, it lacks both fax capabilities and an automatic document feeder (ADF), so there's no easy way to scan legal-size pages (which are too big to fit on the printer's flatbed) or multi-page documents. Yet it offers better-looking text output than most inkjets aimed at office use. The result is a home MFP that can double as a home office printer, if not a full-function office MFP. The 5250 prints, scans, and copies. It doesn't include an Ethernet connection, but it supports WiFi, so you can share it easily and connect from more than one computer without having to worry about stringing cables from room to room. Its 100-sheet paper capacity limits it to light-duty printing, but that should be sufficient for home use, even with some light-duty home-office printing thrown in. Interestingly, office-centric features aren't the only thing missing from the 5250.

Kodak ESP 5250 All-in-One Printer

The Kodak ESP 5250 All-in-One color inkjet multifunction printer costs only $150 (as of February 5, 2010) and includes Wi-Fi connectivity--a nice feature to have at this price point. Otherwise, it's essentially the same average-quality, slightly slothful machine as its $20-cheaper cousin, the Kodak ESP 3250 All-in-One. It's best for light-duty school or home use. Aside from the Wi-Fi, one highlight from the ESP 5250's feature set is the 2.4-inch, tiltable color LCD, whose menus are as intuitive as the navigation buttons that work with it. And in the back of the machine is a roller insert that helps you clear paper jams (though we experienced none). Other than that, the ESP 5250 is a sparsely featured machine. Its single, 100-sheet front input tray also catches up to 50 sheets of output, right on top of unused sheets--a common, but clumsy, design among low-cost models. A single media slot takes MultiMediaCard, Memory Stick, and SD Card. The driver and the LCD walk you through manual duplexing on the PC; but for the Mac, you'll find just a klunky workaround documented on Kodak's support site. The prop arm for the scanner unit seemed wiggly at the joint.
