Kodak ESP Office 2170 All-in-One Printer

Kodak's ESP Office 2170 color inkjet multifunction printer (print, scan, copy, fax) aims at the home-office market, highlighting its affordable ink and its very economical purchase price ($150 as of 09/16/2011). Unfortunately no perfect multifunction exists at this price point; the ESP Office 2170’s particular weaknesses are minimal features, slow performance, and mediocre output quality on plain paper. To Kodak’s credit, the ESP Office 2170 is very easy to use. Installation via Wi-Fi or USB is straightforward, and the control panel’s labeled buttons are refreshing in their one-to-one functionality. The unit also features a readable, if small, 1.5-inch LCD screen. The software handles all multifunction chores ably. Paper-handling features on the ESP Office 2170 are minimal. The only input is the vertical 150-sheet feed at the back of the unit, and duplex printing is manual only. The output tray pulls out the front of the unit and holds approximately 50 sheets. The flatbed scanner under the automatic document feeder (ADF) handles up to A4-size paper, but it does not telescope to accommodate thicker material.

Kodak ESP Office 2170 review

The Kodak ESP Office 2170 is an all-in-one printer designed for use in a home office. As well as letting you print photos and the like, it offers more business-like features, such as an automatic document feeder that allows you to photocopy several pages without having to manually feed each sheet into the scanner. The 2170 is available for around £125. The 2170 has the usual boxy, angular look of a multi-function printer. Although its matte black, plastic chassis looks rather cheap, we reckon it's likely to stand up well to long-term use. A small stripe of Kodak's corporate yellow on the scanner lid brightens up the device's appearance. On the front, there's a small, 1.5-inch colour screen. The screen is fine for tasks like setting up the number of photocopies to be made, but it seems very small when you're working with pictures. Next to the screen there's a pretty busy control panel that has dedicated buttons for copying, scanning, faxing and printing photos. There's also a numerical keypad so you can enter fax numbers. Below this panel, on the left-hand side, there's both a multi-format card reader for printing photos and a USB PictBridge port so you can connect your camera directly to the printer.

Kodak ESP Office 2170 All-in-One Printer

Although you might assume otherwise from the name, Kodak's self-proclaimed office multifunction printer (MFP) - the Kodak ESP Office 2170 All-In-One Printer ($149.99 direct) - is better appreciated as a good fit for a home office or the dual role of home and home office printer than as an office printer per se. Granted, it delivers key office-centric features, including a 25-page automatic document feeder (ADF), but both its output quality and print speed are much more impressive for photos than for business applications, and that tags it as a good choice for home printing too. As with other Kodak printers, including the Editors' Choice Kodak ESP C310 All In One Printer ($99.99 direct, 4 stars), Kodak touts a relatively low claimed cost per page for the 2170 as one of its key attractions. More important, as with the C310, the claimed 3.7 cents per monochrome page and 11.3 cents per color page are lower than the claimed costs for most similarly priced printers. That means you'll save money from the first page you print, which also means you'll save money no matter how much - or how little - you print. In most other ways, the 2170 offers a fairly typical set of capabilities for a home and home office MFP.
