Hewlett Packard's TopShot LaserJet Pro M275 is a multifunction device with a difference. Instead of a scanner, it captures images using an 8MP digital camera located on a foldaway arm. It takes six quick exposures at various settings, and compiles them into a single composite image. It's not the first MFD to swap its flatbed scanner for a digital camera; Lexmark's Genesis S815 took a similar approach over a year ago. But putting the camera on a mount so it can take images of 3D objects is innovative. For small items, the camera-based capture system works well. Images are clear and vivid, and over-exposure due to the flash is kept to a minimum, unless the object is very reflective. When we captured an iPhone, the screen was unviewable. It's less successful with taller objects that get closer to the camera, as perspective is a little skewed. Pictures of flat pages (up to A4) are serviceable but not as good as you'd get from a flatbed scanner. As a printer, it's similar to the HP LaserJet Pro M175nw, also with a small footprint, so it's therefore suited for home use. However, it's still limited to a single paper tray with a capacity of just 150 sheets, making it unsuitable for sharing in all but the smallest offices. Duplex is again manual only.
The HP TopShot LaserJet Pro Color M275nw is presented as the first colour multifunction printer equipped with the innovative 3D scanning process enabling it to scan images of real objects with the TopShot Scanning scanner and post them straight to the Internet. A great idea that should be of interest to companies and individual salespeople on online sites. According to recent figures from etailers' trade body, IMRG, online sales in the UK were up 16% on last year in January. This model is small (46.8 x 40.9 x 27 cm) and discrete enough with its black plastics to stand on any desk. The driver is built-in and you simply plug the printer in to any computer to get everything installed. You’ll be able to connect it up via USB, Ethernet, or wi-fi. The TopShot LaserJet Pro is a compact machine and its 128 MB memory means it can be shared comfortably by a group of twenty people. We like its touchscreen and connectivity, though the finish doesn’t really inspire confidence. The platter simply sits on top of the cartridges and the plastic coating on the arm is rather cheap looking. This 3-in-1 supports PCL 5c and 6 and Postscript but there’s no duplex mode. The paper loader has a capacity of 150 pages, which is ideal for home use. You’ll have to pull the scanner plate out to access the four cartridges lodged deep in the machine.
Depending on how you define MFP, the HP TopShot LaserJet Pro M275 ($399.99 direct) either isn't an MFP at all, or it's an MFP (multi-function printer) with a difference. It's built around a color laser printer, with high-quality output for text, graphics, and photos. But instead of adding a standard scanner, HP has added something it calls a TopShot scanner, which is actually a camera that copies or scans by essentially snapping a picture. The result has some serious limitations for scanning paper, but if you need to scan 3D objects—for showing products on your company Web site, say—this might be the MFP you've been waiting for. On paper at least, the TopShot M275 seems to be a near twin of the HP LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175nw ($349.99 direct, 3 stars) that I reviewed earlier this year. The only obvious difference is that the M175nw's standard scanner is swapped out for the TopShot scanner. Both printers offer the same claimed speed, at 17 pages per minute (ppm) for printing in monochrome and 4 ppm for color, and both share the same limited paper handling, which makes them a good choice for light duty printing only.
