HP Scanjet Professional 1000 Mobile Scanner

The HP Scanjet Professional 1000 Mobile Scanner ($249.99 direct) is the third portable scanner I've reviewed recently; the other two are the Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini ($295 Direct, ) and the Plustek MobileOffice AD450 ($230 Street, ). The good news is that the HP scanner has the advantage of being the smallest and lightest of the three. The bad news is that it lightens the load primarily by leaving out an automatic document feeder (ADF), which means you have to feed pages manually, one at a time. Taken together, these three scanners effectively define a new generation of portables. They all dare to be a little bigger and heavier than earlier-generation models, but they deliver faster speed than the previous generation as well as duplexing (the ability to scan both sides of a page at once). The Scanjet 1000's lack of an ADF makes it less capable than the others in some ways, but if most of what you expect to scan on the road are one- and two-page documents, not having an ADF may be worth the savings in size and weight. In any case, the Scanjet 1000 is easy to carry. It measures just 2.0 by 3.0 by 11.3 inches (HWD) and weighs only 1.4 pounds. HP even ships it with a padded, soft carrying case.
