Multifunction Inkjet Printer Reviews

A 3-in-1 colour inkjet, the HP Photosmart Plus (210a) is part of the 2010 range, which is something of a nightmare in terms of reference numbers. Like all the Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One (eAiO) models, it's connected to the Internet and has its own email address. This model is designed for individual consumers and promises simplicity of use thanks to a TouchSmart touchscreen and pro quality prints. The touchscreen at the front of the machine looks a bit like an iPhone positioned vertically. The only physical button is the on/off button. This compact (45.2 x 39 x 19.9 cm, 7.45 Kg) multifunction printer is intuitive and easy to use. The inclusion of wi-fi means it can be shared among several users as well as printing from other devices without the need of a computer. You can print in colouring pages or a page of Yahoo! news as well as Sudoku panels, calendars, music or graph paper, all at the press of a button... The paper loader has a capacity of 125 A4 pages and 40 pages of photo paper (10 x 15 cm) and is at the front, as is the SD card reader. There's no double-sided on the Photosmart Plus, unlike the higher end HP Photosmart Premium e-ALL-IN-ONE C310. Inside, you'll find four separated cartridges (black, cyan, magenta and yellow).

HP Photosmart Plus B210a review

Most all-in-one printers concern themselves with four main areas: printing, scanning, faxing and photocopying. The HP Photosmart Plus B210a adds web apps to this list. While almost every all-in-one can connect to your home network, this one supports third-party apps, giving you even more options for what to do with your photos. For example, the Snapfish icon lets you upload photos you've scanned to the Snapfish website, where you can edit and share them. You can also use Snapfish to transform photos into canvases, photo books, calendars and more. Other apps let you find and print articles from the internet without turning on your PC, and print out calendars, notepaper and even games. A press of the touchscreen gives you a sheet of Sudoku puzzles, for example. All the apps and other functions can be accessed via the touchscreen on the front of the printer. The screen lacks responsiveness, and we often had to jab at it a number of times before the printer recognised what we wanted. Print quality is fantastic, with vibrant colours doing justice to photos on normal and glossy photo paper. It's also quiet, which is a relief after the noisy work of the Kodak ESP 7250. Scanning and copying are also quick, and the results are excellent.

HP Photosmart Plus eAll-in-One review

Wi-Fi is the way to go for home printing convenience, enabling you to output documents from any desktop computers or laptops around the home. But what happens when you're stuck at the office or out on the road and you want to print something out back at home? HP's new e-All-in-One series of printers feature a crafty ePrint system, which enables you to send emails direct to the printer itself, after which it will automatically create prints from any attachments that you've added. Occupying the middle ground, the Photosmart Plus model adds a touch-screen colour LCD that's lacking on the more basic Wireless e-All-in-One printer, but doesn't stretch to auto duplex double-sided printing, as featured on the more up-market Premium e-All-in-One model. On the face of it, the Photosmart Plus e-All-in-One printer looks like a typical Wi-Fi multifunction device, combining a 9600dpi four-ink printing system with a 1200dpi scanner and memory card slots for SD cards, MMC and Memory Stick Duo. The four ink cartridges are individually replaceable and running costs are fairly low at around 2p per mono text page and 6.7p for colour, at least if you buy the high-yield 'XL' cartridges (standard yield cartridges are supplied with the printer).

Product Survey: Multifunction Printers

Apart from that though, both printers are essentially the same, both printers use the same cartridges and offer identical printing quality and running costs, and print at almost exactly the same speed too. The Photosmart Plus doesn't take up too much from and comes with Windows, Mac and Linux drivers. The larger screen means that the Photosmart Plus often costs a lot more than the Wireless. If you do spot them on sale for roughly the same price though, don't hesitate to go for the Plus With a larger screen, measuring 2.4'' instead of the 1.4'' on the Wireless, the printer is not just more attractive, but also easier to use because the whole surface of the display is touch-sensitive this time around. We measured speeds that are close to the Photosmart itself and the Photosmart Wireless edition, which means it's somewhat faster than average. There are faster printers out there, but do you really need to print documents at more than 12 pages per minute? Using our test document, we didn't spot much of a difference between black-and-white and colour printing. You'll need 39 seconds to produce a borderless 4 x 6'' photo print, or two minutes on A4 on average.
