HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One
One step down in HP's line from the Editor's Choice HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct, 4.5 stars), the HP Officejet Pro 8600 e-All-in-One ($199.99 direct) leaves out a few luxury features, like a legal-size flatbed. However, it also costs only two thirds as much. That potentially makes it a better choice if you don't need the extras. The one catch is that it's not simply the same printer with fewer features. It's also a tad slower and prints slightly better quality text, but slightly lower quality graphics. Like the 8600 Plus, the 8600 is aimed primarily at micro or small offices or at home offices with relatively heavy-duty print needs. It's not surprising, then, that it offers all the same basics. It prints, scans, and faxes; works as a standalone copier and fax machine; and it lets you scan to or print from a memory card or USB memory key. It will let you connect by Ethernet, WiFi, or USB, use Apple AirPrint to print over WiFi, and use HP's ePrint to print though cloud. With ePrint, the printer gets its own email address, so you can print a document by sending it as an attachment to an email message. One other feature the two printers share is a touch screen interface. However, the screen on the 8600 is smaller, at only 2.65 inches.
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One
Aimed squarely at micro and small offices, the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One ($299.99 direct) is more directly competitive with low-end color laser MFPs like the HP LaserJet Pro 100 Color MFP M175nw ($349.99 direct, 3 stars) than with inkjets. Because it's an inkjet, however, it can also offer high-quality photos, a trick that makes it appropriate for the dual role of home and home office MFP too. More important, it performs well enough to make it a good fit in any of these roles, and even serve as a heavy-duty personal MFP, if you have the room for it. If there's an important feature you might want in an office color multi-function printer (MFP) that you won't find in the 8600 Plus, I don't know what it could be. Basic MFP functions include printing, scanning, and faxing, including over a network, as well as working as a standalone copier, fax machine, and email sender, and letting you scan to a USB key or memory card. The printer connects by WiFi or Ethernet (as well as USB of course), it supports Apple AirPrint for printing from iThings over Wi-Fi, and it can print through the cloud using HP's ePrint, which lets you assign the printer an email address and then send documents as attachments for printing.
HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus e-All-in-One Printer
In a world filled with cheap but underpowered inkjet multifunction printers (MFPs), using the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is a pleasant departure. One of the most competent MFPs for the price ($300 as of 12/05/2011), it lacks nothing in its features, is solidly constructed, fully supports legal-size paper, is faster than everything else in its price range, and even offers dirt-cheap ink. There's not much more you could ask for. When it comes to paper handing, the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus can do everything. It automatically duplexes printouts, and copies two-sided-to-two-sided as well. Legal-size paper is fully supported throughout the printer (as it is with all OfficeJet Pro models), including the scanner and the 50-sheet ADF. The 250-sheet paper tray is adequate for most small businesses and workgroups, as is the approximately 50-sheet output tray. If you need more tray capacity, you can step up to the HP Officejet Pro 8600 Premium e-All-in-One Printer, which has an additional 250-sheet input tray--for another $100. Setting up the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus is a breeze with any of the three supported interfaces: USB, ethernet, and Wi-Fi.
