After its recent success with turntables, Hercules is extending its mixing range with a series of headphones headed up by the HDP DJ-Pro M1001s. It remains to be seen if they can find their niche in what is already a very well supplied market. For a first timer, Hercules does well to avoid any disasters. The M1001s are robest, well made and with no major problems. They do however suffer from the odd drawback. Aesthetically for example, while we like the jog-wheel look borrowed from the Hercules decks, we aren't so keen on the dark matte plastic. It should stand up to heavy use okay, but the very computerish dark grey doesn't look as good as real black. The logos on each earcup could also do with a bit of work. Otherwise, purely in terms of design, the earcups are very flexible and could even do with being a little less so to stop them from flipping all over the place when you’re repositioning them rapidly. How solid the joints are, only time will tell. The thick headband is well padded and, like the cups, shouldn't pose any comfort issues. Though designed for electronic production, the M1001s lean towards a neutral, analytical sound. Overall the results are homogenous, though there is some variation (to be expected).
