Reviews: Computer and Hi-Fi Headphones

Something for everyone was surely the moto of the Hercules engineers when developing the Adv G501s, a very ‘Beats-compliant’ pair of cans. There’s very little difference between the M1001s and the G501s in terms of outward design. In fact the only differences are that the matte black plastic has been replaced by glossy black and the blue trimming by green. The two sets therefore have similar qualities: robust but not always very pretty materials, very (almost too) flexible earcups and a removable cable. There’s nothing more to say here. Though not in the same league as the Beats headphones (unbearable with 15 dB too much bass), the G501s certainly lay the bass on thick. This accentuation is quite even in the lower half of the spectrum but very much on top for the rest and you really notice it. The sound isn’t too muddy, but the bass is nevertheless very invasive. The rest of the spectrum is there, but pushed back. We would have liked the top end to be given a push to compensate. Obviously the heavy bass means you lose some detail and sharpness of spatial sensation, but overall the sound is quite coherent and clean. Once again, this set of headphones show that you can go for plenty of bass without compromising the sound entirely.
