Hanns.G HZ281 review

In the battle of the big, budget-priced screens there can be only one. One winner, that is. But will it be this 28-inch Hanns.G HZ281 monitor or its nemesis, the 27-inch Iiyama E2710HDS? The Hanns.G obviously squeaks it for acreage. It has a larger diagonal to the tune of a single inch. However, the HZ281 also sports a 16:10 aspect ratio to the Iiyama's 16:9. That makes the size differential in square inches even larger, but it also means the HZ281 has more pixels. Both screens pack 1,920 in the horizontal plane. But the Hanns.G ups the ante from 1,080 to 1,200 in the vertical. That's probably just as well given that the HZ281 is over £40 pricier. By most other metrics, it looks like a dead heat. We're talking TN panels, HDMI, DVI and VGA ports and tilt-only stands all round. May the best monitor win. Small changes can make a big difference. On paper, you wouldn't wager the difference between the 16:9 masses and the Hanns.G HZ281 with its 16:10 aspect ratio amounts to much. And you'd be wrong. The main difference is an extra 120 vertical pixels. For typical PC usage, that matters. It means you can see more of web pages and documents without scrolling. The impression of increased spaciousness really is tangible.

Monitor Reviews: 23'', 24'', 25'', 26'', 27'' and 28'' LCD Displays

Its new 28'' monitor has the added bonus of having a resolution of 1920 x 1200 pixels, which is better for office work than the more common 1080p. Hardware: where's the stand? The monitor is very well made, but is still lacking in usability. Although you get VGA, DVI and HDMI inputs, as well as a pair of 2 W speakers and a headphone jack, we've rarely seen a less impressive stand. The only possibility for movement is tilting the panel back a few degrees. We were very much hoping to find something more impressive, with a height-adjustable stand, or one that allowed for horizontal rotation too. Before you turn on your HZ281, make sure you put on some sun screen, find the Menu button and keep your finger hovering over it ready to dive in and turn the brightness down. Using the default settings, the screen's brightness is as high as 400 cd/m², twice the recommended level for a room with normal lighting. Unless you want to use your new monitor to replace your lights, the first step is turn brightness down from 100 to 30. Fortunately, colour reproduction isn't affected by this adjustment, and the HZ281's average deltaE remains under 3.0, the level at which the majority of users will perceive them as accurate.
