Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300

The Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 ($295 direct) isn't unique in offering what are usually desktop conveniences in a portable scanner. However it's one of the of the few, along with the similarly priced Editors' Choice Canon imageFormula P-150 Scan-tini ($295, 4 stars), that includes both an automatic document feeder (ADF) and the ability to scan both sides of a page as quickly as it can scan one side. In truth, the P-150 outshines the S1300 in many ways, from its faster speed to its smaller size and weight. But the S1300 offers some strengths of its own, including much better business card scanning, to keep it very much in the running. At 3 by 11.2 by 3.9 inches (HWD), the S1300 is on the large side for a portable, and at 3.1 pounds, it's about a pound heavier than that the P-150. Even so, it's small enough to be reasonably portable or to serve as a particularly small desktop scanner for light duty scanning. The ADF is limited to 10 sheets, which is only half of the P-150's capacity, but it's infinitely better than the one-page at a time manual feed that you'll find on most other portables. Setup and SoftwareFor my tests, I connected the S1300 to a system running Windows Vista.

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300

The $295 (as of February 1, 2011) Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 is a small, 600-dpi portable scanner that handles up to ten pages in its automatic document feeder, performs double-sided scanning, and provides good-looking images from a variety of documents. The S1300 is one of the few portable scanners available that offer the productivity advantage of a built-in ADF that's designed to travel along with the scanner itself. As such, the S1300 is an excellent choice if you need a home or office document scanner that's also mobile. This compact scanner weighs only 3.08 pounds and measures 11.18 by 3.9 by 3.03 inches (width by depth by height), or roughly the size of a small Duraflame fire log. Outfitted with a single start button that launches easy-to-use scanner software, the S1300 can run on either USB power or a wall outlet. Its cover lid also serves as a paper-chute extension for holding a stack of pages, and it easily folds up when not in use. A power cord and power supply, a USB cable, and a USB power cord are all provided; you'll need your own carrying bag for toting the scanner and cables on the road, however. The S1300 earned a Very Good rating for its overall image quality (using its default settings).

Fujitsu ScanSnap S1300 review

Fujitsu's ScanSnap S1300 is easy to carry around, but scanning on the move is only one of its talents. It's also very fast. If you regularly scan documents or large photo collections, it could well prove its worth without ever leaving your home or office desk. The ScanSnap S1300 can be powered through the mains or USB (two ports required). It's small and light enough to fit in your travel bag and use with your notebook at that all-important business conference, and when you have the software installed, it's extremely simple to use. It's straightforward to configure too, and can scan documents directly to your hard drive, email, printer or iPhoto. The bundled Cardiris OCR application lets you scan to editable Word and Excel files, it can create searchable PDFs and its Duplex feature scans both sides of a document with one pass through the scanner. Document sizes from A4 to business cards can be scanned in colour, black-and-white or greyscale.In our tests, a 20-page, one-sided text document scanned to PDF in three minutes, 32 seconds under mains power, and just over eight minutes under USB.
