The R3000 is the follow-up to Epson's highly-rated R2800 large-format printer. It can handle big sheets of up to A3+ in size and uses a total of nine ink cartridges to deliver more professional quality prints. All this technology doesn't come cheap. To get your mitts on this beast you're going to have to shell out around £550. The R3000 isn't aimed at amateurs who want to run off a few snaps. It's targeted at serious photo enthusiasts and designers who want to produce top quality printouts of their work on paper sizes up to A3+. The bigger paper that this model can handle requires a large chassis, measuring 616mm wide, so it's likely to need a dedicated desk. The design is utilitarian, with the only flourishes being rounded edges on the top and bottom and a sliver band around the front. You can print directly to CD/DVD using the mounting tray provided. There was no screen on the older R2800 model, but Epson has added one this time around, along with large cursor buttons to help you move through the menus. The screen displays animated instructions for loading various paper and media types, saving you having to dig out the manual. The R3000 can handle a range of papers. As well as A4 and A3 sheets, this model can print to paper on a roll or onto card.
It's now almost 10 years since Epson launched the Stylus Photo 2100. The SP2100 was an instant success due to its use of long lasting UltraChrome pigment inks which claimed a life of 200+ years. Many photographers were now ready to move out of the darkroom and fully embrace digital photography. The SP2100 set a new benchmark for digital photo printing. The quality of photos that this printer could produce was excellent: traditional wet chemistry process now had a serious rival. The SP2100 remained the de-facto choice that every serious photographer wanted. This was replaced some three years later by the R2400, followed by the R2800 and R2880. Other dye-ink based printers were also launched during this time, but for archival printing the only option is to use a pigment ink printer. Epson has added another A3+ printer the R3000. This is not a replacement to the much-loved R2880, but comes in addition to Epson's professional line up that includes the R3880 A2 printer. The R3000 is aimed both at the professional and advanced hobbyist photographer who may want to produce a short print runs or limited edition prints. The R3000 uses Epson's tried and tested UltraChrome K3 ink set, which consists of 9 inks including the new Vivid Magenta and four blacks.
For many enthusiast photographers Epson's Stylus Photo R2880 is the printer they use, or aspire to using. Though it produces excellent prints, it suffers from two often cited problems, both of which the new R3000 addresses. The first of these is that although the R2880 is capable of using nine inks, it only has eight cartridge bays and the Matte Black and Photo Black ink tanks are interchangeable. This means that if you switch from printing on glossy media to matte, you must remember to swap the ink cartridges. It's not difficult or messy, just a pain having to remember.Epson's new R3000 has nine cartridge bays to accept the Matte black, Photo Black, Light Black, Light Light Black, Cyan, Light Cyan, Vivid Magenta, Vivid Light Magenta and Photo Yellow tanks and it switches between the Matte and Photo Black inks as required. Just as the print media is selected via the print driver, the user can tell the R3000 whether to use the Matte or Photo Blacks. We were originally told by Epson UK that the R3000 has 9 ink channels, one for each cartridge. This would mean that printer doesn't have to purge and recharge the black ink lines when swapping between the Matte and Photo Blacks.
