Reviews: Multifunction Printers

This inkjet printer is part of Epson's Stylus Photo range of multifunction printers. The Stylus Photo PX660 is a 3-in-1 colour printer that's aimed at users who want to be able to print their own photos at home. Epson has put the emphasis firmly on imaging, saying that it can produce better quality prints than having your photos developed professionally. It also claims that the Stylus Photo PX660 is fast, easy to use and has low running costs—but just how true is all of that? The PX660 is hardly imposing and has a discrete, compact form factor, measuring just 45 x 38 x 27 cm and 8.4 kg. There's no paper tray: instead a holder with room for 120 sheets of ordinary A4 paper or twenty sheets of photo paper is hidden at the back. That's not much, but enough for the printer's target audience. Apart from the power switch, there are no traditional buttons. The rest of the control panel uses a touch-sensitive interface and the various buttons light up based on the various options available at different points. This modern, minimalist system is quite fun to use and very easy. Your options include making copies and scanning photos, setting the printer up for Windows and Mac OS, and a USB input to connect your digital camera directly.

Epson Stylus Photo PX660 review

Epson Stylus Photo PX660: OverviewSmartly presented in a mix of contrasting gloss and matte black surfaces and nicely rounded styling, the PX660 boasts 'better-than-lab-quality' photo printing abilities, along with a 2400dpi scanner and multi-format memory card reader. Everything is linked by a neat and intuitive control panel which enables direct printing from memory cards or PictBridge-compatible cameras, along with standalone photocopying. Based on the time-honoured tradition of six-ink photo printing, the PX660 adds light cyan and light magenta inks to the basic CMYK mix, all six being from Epson's latest Claria range of photographic dye-based inks. As usual for Epson printers, each ink cartridge is individually replaceable. Theoretically, this keeps running costs down to a minimum if you use a lot of one particular ink colour but, as we'll see later, the PX660 isn't exactly cheap to run. At the heart of the PX660 is Epson's tried and tested micro-piezo print head technology. This differs from the system used in every other make of inkjet printer, as the ink isn't boiled to force a rapid expansion that expels it from the print head.
