Epson Stylus NX515

A student or home user will like this multifunction printer’s speed, but not its ink costs and other quirks. Epson's Stylus NX515 color inkjet multifunction printer (MFP) is well priced for the home or student user ($130 at this writing). Speed and a few notable features help it stand out, despite its high ink costs and other shortcomings. The Stylus NX515 is one of the fastest inkjet multifunctions we've tested to date. It printed plain, black text at a rate of 18.4 pages per minute (ppm), and graphics as quickly as 5.1 ppm. (Epson's claim of up to 36 ppm ignores the initial processing time required by every print job.) The print quality was almost as good as the speed. On plain paper, text samples were a little fuzzy, while graphics looked grainy and sometimes yellowish. On Epson's own photo paper, textures improved, but we noticed an overall pinkish cast and some dullness to the colors. Of the built-in features, we liked the connectivity and the control-panel design best. You get Wi-Fi connectivity along with USB and ethernet. Media slots can take CF, MS, SD, and xD cards; you also get a PictBridge port. The 2.5-inch color LCD is tiltable.

Epson Stylus NX515 Review

Calling the Epson Stylus NX515 an all-in-one is a bit of stretch, considering it doesn’t include a fax machine. On the other hand, not everyone wants or needs to send and receive faxes, and eliminating that feature while retaining a flatbed scanner brings the price of this pretty and relatively capable printer down to just $150. As such, the machine is certainly recommendable, albeit only for certain tasks. Read on for more details on whether or not it fits your needs. The Stylus NX515’s industrial design echoes that of our current favorite printer, the Artisan 800 , which does include a fax machine—and a whole bunch of other great features you won’t find in its cheaper cousin. It wouldn’t be fair to expect a $150 printer to deliver the same performance as a $300 printer, so we won’t make too many comparisons. However, printer shoppers should also be aware that Epson is offering a $70 instant rebate on the Artisan 800, which significantly shrinks the price delta between it and the printer we’re reviewing now. The Stylus NX515 has strong feature set for its price range, including a memory card slot, PictBridge support, and a 2.5-inch LCD for printing digital photos without a PC.

Epson Stylus NX515 (printer/copier/scanner)

The Epson Stylus NX515 All-in-One printer represents a sweet spot for vendors. The $150 price tag seems to be just the amount of money folks are willing to spend on a printer for intermittent use, either at work or in the home. However, just because the machine might not get used every day doesn't mean that it shouldn't function flawlessly and retain its value over time. After putting the Stylus NX515 through our usual benchmark and quality tests, we have no problem recommending it to shoppers for its quick printing speeds, pleasing output quality, and a host of valuable features not typically included for under $200. The sleek design of the Epson Stylus NX515 certainly sets it apart from other all-in-ones. We like the carbon-weave pattern that runs across the entire hood of the control panel. The grainy texture makes it easy to lift up and protects the lid from unsightly fingerprints as well. Like most printers, the finish is a black, which leaves the printer with a subtle elegance that should fit comfortably into any office aesthetic. The output tray and the rear-loading paper feed both fold flat into the device, which measures 17.7 inches wide, 21.3 inches deep, and 11.7 inches tall--about the average size for today's printers.
