Epson Artisan 837

Epson likes to point to the midnight blue design touches on the Epson Artisan 837 ($299.99 direct) as part of its self-professed sleek look (a claim you may or may not agree with). However, that may be because it's one of the few clear differences between the Artisan 837 and the Epson Artisan 835 ($299.99 direct, 4 stars) that it's replacing in Epson's line (although the Artisan 835 is still available at this writing). Both printers offer essentially the same speed, output quality, and features, and both are good choices for home, home office, or both. Like the Artisan 835, the Artisan 837 offers such office-centric features as both a flatbed and a 30-page automatic document feeder to handle stacks of letter- and legal-size pages. It can print, scan, and fax, even over a network; work as a standalone copier and fax machine; and connect by Ethernet or WiFi for easy sharing. Photocentric features include the ability to print directly from PictBridge cameras, memory cards, and USB memory keys as well as preview photos before printing on the 3.5-inch display. Also aimed primarily at home use is the ability to print directly on printable optical discs, and features like stored templates for printing notebook paper and graph paper from the front panel.

Epson Artisan 837 Color Inkjet All-In-One

The Epson Artisan 837 color inkjet multifunction (print/copy/scan/fax) is a high-end home unit that aims to give you pretty much every feature you could possibly want, plus stunning photo quality. Although its $300 purchase price (as of October 4, 2011) is dear, its ongoing ink costs are quite reasonable. Setting up the Artisan 837 wirelessly is a breeze, as it offers both WPS and a Wi-Fi wizard. A series of concise and simple-to-understand dialog boxes guide you through the driver and software setup. Overall the Epson software is capable and easy to use. The HTML-based help files are informative and logically laid out, but they're available online only. USB and ethernet connections are also included, for anyone who wants a more secure and reliable connection. The Artisan 837 is clad in midnight-blue casing that’s a subtle departure from the shiny black everyone seems to be favoring now. On the front you’ll find a 7.8-inch-wide, tiltable control panel that incorporates a 3.5-inch color touchscreen LCD flanked by backlit touch controls. The controls light up contextually, appearing only when required. Although this design is the wave of the future, we still find traditional buttons and LCDs more straightforward.
