Monitor Reviews: 22''-30'' LCD Displays

Take a 27'' IPS panel with a huge 2560 x 1440 pixel resolution, add colour calibration as standard, make sure it's nice and responsive and add a pinch of the excellent hardware Dell is so well-known for and you've got a recipe for the U2711. The Dell U2711 shares the same basic design as the U2410, and the overall styling is refined and elegant. The monitor enjoys an impeccable finish, and the range of hardware options is very similar to that offered on the 24'' version, apart from a few exceptions. There's a HDMI port, two DVI inputs, VGA, Component video, DisplayPort, a four-port USB hub and a memory card reader. Because the monitor has an IPS panel it can boast very wide viewing angles—or wider, at least, than a TN-based monitor would manage. One thing that has gone is the pivot mode, meaning you can't rotate it to portrait orientation. The new monitor might not have built-in speakers, but it does have three mini-jack outputs that allow you to pick up the sound carried by the HDMI signal and send it to your speakers (up to 5.1) with analogue inputs. A resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels easily allows you to display two documents or Web pages side by side.

Dell Ultrasharp U2711 review

Can you have too much of a good thing? If you're a sucker for a fat flat panel, you might think the answer in the context of PC displays is no. And you'd be wrong. Have a chat with owners of that most majestic of monitors, the 30-incher, and you'll discover many have come to the conclusion that bigger isn't always better. The problem with 30-inch panels is that the edges of the display can feel distant. Viewing angles also come into the equation in a way that simply doesn't factor for small screens. Consequently, it's all too easy to find yourself only using the centre of the panel and therefore wondering why the hell you spent all that money. In that regard, a multi-monitor setup often works better thanks to the ability to angle each screen for comfortable viewing. However, 30-inchers do come with one rather big upside. Short of specialist displays designed for engineering and medical industries, it hasn't been possible to match the mammoth 2,560 x 1,600 native resolution of a 30-inch monitor in a smaller display. That's a shame, as a screen with all those pixels in a slightly more manageable footprint would be rather spaffworthy. Enter, therefore, Dell's new 27-inch offering, the UltraSharp U2711.

Dell Ultrasharp U2711

The last time I reviewed one of Dell's UltraSharp monitors, the 2408WFP ($689.00 Direct, ), I was wowed by its solid performance and robust feature set. Despite the relatively high price, it merited an Editors' Choice award. So it was with great anticipation that I popped open the box containing the Dell UltraSharp U2711 (1,099 direct) that recently arrived on my doorstep. And once again, I am impressed. This versatile 27-inch monitor delivers deep, rich colors and offers a multitude of input options. It also does good job of displaying fast action video. It isn't exactly cheap, but the good news is, you'll get what you pay for, which is why it earns our Editors' Choice award. A matte black cabinet houses the U2711's 27-inch screen, which has a maximum resolution of 2,560 by 1,440 pixels and a 16:9 aspect ratio. A dull silver/gray band wraps around the top, bottom, and sides of the display, and a polished chrome Dell logo is positioned at the center of the bottom bezel. The panel is supported by a stand with a rectangular base and an arm with height and swivel capabilities. A hinge mechanism that attaches the panel to the mounting arm lets you tilt the panel forward and backward but lacks pivot capabilities.

Dell UltraSharp U2711

Dell's UltraSharp U2711 is one of the best performing monitors we've seen; but at $1,049, its price will be prohibitive to some buyers. However, the U2711 earns its high price with incredible performance, a plethora of connection options, and the monitor's piece de resistance, its 2,560x1,440-pixel resolution. Dell also fixes the static dithering issue that plagued the U2410's release. This is the monitor to buy if you have the money. Honestly, even if you don't have the budget, you should probably start pinching pennies because it is that good. Design and features The 27-inch Dell UltraSharp U2711 looks a lot like a larger version of the U2410 that Dell released a few weeks back--in fact, it's larger by 3 inches, at least for the screen. Like the U2410, the U2711 has a matte black chassis with a gray highlight running through the middle of the panel. The panel is 1.75 inches deep; however, the back of the display--which houses the backlight, connection options, and ventilation system--extends another 1.5 inches, bringing the full monitor depth to about 3.4 inches. The panel width measures 25.4 inches long and the surface of the screen itself is a slightly frosted and smooth matte.
