Dell UltraSharp U3011 30-inch Monitor Review

There are two types of power users on this planet, and they consist of those who use a 30-inch monitor, and those who don't. The latter far outnumber the former, but thanks to a number of factors, this particular digital divide is growing smaller by the day. For one, 30-inch monitors are somewhat more affordable compared to a few years ago, at least in the sense that the average Joe doesn't have to sell a kidney to come up with the scratch for one (except for teens, who are more interested in trading body organs for iPads, anyway). That in itself is pretty remarkable when you consider that 30-inch monitors aren't just big, they also represent the pinnacle of display technology in terms of picture quality and, in this case, features. It also no longer takes a herculean system to drive a 30-inch panel. Sure, if you plan to play bleeding edge games with all the eye candy maxed out on a 2560x1600 resolution, you better be rocking something more potent than integrated graphics. But if you're more of a casual gamer or are willing to tone down the graphics settings, just about any discrete-level GPU out there will drive a 30-inch display, removing one of the barriers that in years past prevented some PC users from shopping larger screen panels.

Dell UltraSharp U3011 Review

Dell’s 30-inch U3011 features an anti-glare hard coat to reduce reflections, and the 2560x1600 display tilts, swivels, and is height adjustable, but it can’t pivot into portrait mode. The monitor is outfitted with two HDMI and two DVI ports, as well as one analog VGA and one DisplayPort input. USB hubs are always convenient, and Dell obliges with one upstream and four downstream USB 2.0 ports, along with a seven-in-one multicard reader in the side of its bezel. The U3011 turned in a solid performance as we ran it through our gauntlet of DisplayMate benchmarks, producing some of the crispest text we’ve seen in tests that examine font clarity and readability. The monitor also did well on pixel-tracking tests that expose digital noise, and it produced stellar results in color-ramp tests that evaluate the display’s ability to produce smooth color gradations. Dell’s monitor performed slightly better than NEC's pricier PA301W in the ringing and overshoot tests, but we did detect a small amount of moiré when we watched the Blu-ray version of V for Vendetta. The U3011 exhibited a small amount of noise in suits, faces, and background signs.

Dell UltraSharp U3011

Dell's UltraSharp monitors have been wowing us since 2005, starting with the 2405FPW, right up to and including the recently reviewed U2711. The latest addition to this elite family of displays, the UltraSharp U3011 ($1,499 direct), continues the trend, combining outstanding performance with a generous selection of ports and features. You'll need deep pockets to afford this beauty, and while its dark grayscale performance is good, it could be better. That said, the U3011 easily wins our Editors' Choice award for big screen monitors. Design-wise, the U3011 is identical to the U2711, the only difference being screen size. The cabinet is matte black with thin (0.8 inch) bezels and a silver band around its edges. A polished chrome Dell logo adorns the bottom bezel, and there's a blue backlit power switch in the lower right-hand corner. A row of five touch sensitive function buttons are positioned along the lower right bezel, but they remain unlit (and unseen) until you press the one that lights up when your finger gets close. Each button corresponds to a menu command that pops up on the screen when the buttons are illuminated, making it easy to navigate through the various settings.
