Dell Wireless Laser Printer B1160w review

Like most of the budget monochrome printers in Dell's product lineup, the B1160w wireless laser printer is a mediocre performer for the price, capable of serving up a limited amount of prints in a personal-use environment, like a dorm room or a home office. Its 150-sheet paper input capacity and lack of Ethernet connectivity certainly aren't ideal for medium and large work groups, but the company builds in 802.11 b/g/n wireless and Dell's mobile printing apps for Android smartphones. If you don't have a lot of money to spend on a printer but still need a wireless device for use around the home, you won't regret investing in the $120 Dell B1160w. The B1160w is easy to set up thanks to an intuitive software guide and the printer's compact dimensions. The printer measures 13.03 inches wide, 8.46 inches deep, and 7 inches tall, so you should still have plenty of room on your desk to work on after setting it up next to a computer. Like many laser printers, Dell uses a conservative black design with a curved paper path that places the output tray on top of the small, rectangular unit.

Single-Function Laser Printer Reviews

The Dell B1160w is a wireless, black and white laser printer with an intriguingly compact design. In fact, it's barely bigger than a shoe-box. Designed for freelancers, home-workers and small businesses (10,000 pages per month), it promises excellent value for money, ease of use and low running costs. Measuring 33 x 21 x 17 cm and weighing 4 kg, the B1160w is the smallest laser printer we've reviewed yet. Even the Canon i-SENSYS LBP6000 is a few centimetres bigger. Functions are a bit thin on the ground though, as there's no double-sided printing mode, no memory card reader and no sign of the PCL or Postscript print languages. This printer does, however, come with Wi-Fi connectivity, and is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux. Its 32 MB memory means it can be easily shared between around twenty users. With onboard Wi-Fi and the Dell Mobile Print app (free to download from Google Play), you can print web pages, photos, PDFs e-mails and more directly from an Android mobile phone. It's just a shame that there's no app for iPhone users. There are only two buttons on the front of this printer: an On/Off button and a WPS button for setting up Wi-Fi.

Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer

It takes only a glance at the Dell B1160w Wireless Mono Laser Printer to peg it as a personal printer. Smaller than an inkjet, it won't take up much room on your desk, and even though it offers Wi-Fi, its 150-sheet paper tray limits its usefulness as a shared printer, even in a micro office. As a personal printer in any size office, however, or a shared printer in a micro office with extremely light-duty print needs, it can potentially be a good fit. Measuring just 7.0 by 13.0 by 8.5 inches (HWD) and weighing in at 8 pounds 13 ounces complete with toner, the B1160w is both smaller and lighter than the similarly priced Editors' Choice Brother HL-2240 . Much of the HL-2240's extra size comes from its better paper handling, including a 100-sheet larger paper capacity plus a manual feed that the B1160w lacks. The trade off is that the HL-2240 doesn't include Wi-Fi . In that context, it's worth mentioning that if you don't need Wi-Fi, but also don't need the HL-2240's paper handling, you can save a few dollars by getting the Dell B1160 Mono Laser Printer ($99.99 direct), which also lacks Wi-Fi. According to Dell the B1160 and B1160w are otherwise identical, so all the comments in this review should apply to it as well.
