Dell 2335DN review

Dell's 2335DN is a monochrome, multi-function laser printer designed for office use. It includes a number of handy features, such as an automatic document feeder and support for two-sided printing. It's available now for around £300. The 2335DN is as visually appealing as a 1960s tower block designed by a brutalist architect with a severe hangover. Its large size and harsh, angular lines means it's far from pretty to look at, but at least the matte finish is less likely to show up fingerprints than models with glossy paint jobs. The control panel is mounted on a sloping edge at the top of the printer and includes a fairly large monochrome display. As it's backlit, it's quite easy to read. Next to the display, there's a four-way cursor pad and a numerical keypad for dialling fax numbers. There are no quick-dial buttons, unfortunately, but there is an address book in which you can store commonly dialled numbers. The bottom of the printer houses a 250-sheet cassette-type paper feeder and, above this, hiding behind a pull-down flap, there's a multi-purpose feeder tray that can be used for printing stuff like envelopes.

Dell 2335dn

Think of the Dell 2335dn as the less expensive, less flashy cousin of the Dell 2355dn Multifunction Mono Laser Printer ($599.99 direct, 3 stars) that I recently reviewed. It lacks the color touch screen control panel that makes the 2355dn stand out from the crowd, but it offers similar speed, output quality, and paper handling. The combination makes the 2335dn just as appropriate as the 2355dn for a small office or workgroup. And for the cost-conscious, the lower price fully makes up for having to use a traditional front panel with buttons and a monochrome LCD instead of a color touch screen. The 2335dn offers everything you'd expect in a full-function MFP for a small office. It can print and fax from - as well as scan to - a PC over a USB or network connection, work as a standalone fax machine and copier, and print from as well as scan to a USB memory key. Important conveniences include a 50-page automatic document feeder (ADF), which supplements the flatbed to let you scan stacks of letter- and legal-size pages. Note too, that the ADF can duplex, turning each page over for copying or scanning. However, it can't duplex for faxing. Paper handling is suitable for most small offices, with a 250-sheet drawer, 50-page multi-purpose tray, and a built-in duplexer standard.

Product Survey: Laser Printers

The 2335dn is a black and white multifunction laser printer with a fax machine. It's got a very traditional look with a boxy shape and black plastic, but its imposing size makes something of an impression. It will be more at home in an office or with a small team than at home. With 128 MB of memory, it will be able to stack up several large documents. Although it doesn't have WiFi, the printer has a network port and an automatic two-sided printing mode. The printer tray can hold 300 sheets. It's compatible with PCL6, PS3 and has drivers with Windows, Mac and Linux. Dell claims the 2335dn is capable of producing 33 pages per minute (ppm). Using our test documents, we measured speeds of 33.8 ppm. The automatic two-sided printing mode is a little less rapid but is still a speedy 14.4 ppm. Today, printers are all relatively fast, with an average minimum of 10 ppm, but things become more complicated when it comes to measuring the time taken to process a document and print its first page. Fortunately, the 2235dn is well within the time published in Dell's specification. When the printer is warmed up, the first page arrives in just 8 seconds, which is good.
