Dell 2150CDN review

Priced at £370, Dell's 2150CDN is very affordable for a colour inkjet model. It offers duplex printing and also includes Ethernet support, so you can hook it into your home network to share it with a number of PCs. The 2150CDN uses traditional laser technology, rather than the LED technology employed on some of the other colour laser models we've seen recently. One of the side-effects of this is that it's a substantial beast, measuring 413mm high with a footprint of 400x406mm. You're going to need quite a large desk to accommodate it. As this model is very noisy when it's operating, you definitely won't want it sitting right next to you when it's in full flow. The design is nothing to write home about. Like a lot of business models it doesn't care much for style. It's essentially a tall box that's finished completely in matte black plastic. The front right-hand side does have a small two-line, 16-character monochrome LCD screen, along with a direction pad, menu button and job cancel button. This model has quite basic controls and a small, two-line display. Apart from the power switch on the left-hand side, that's it as far as controls are concerned.

Dell 2150cdn

The Dell 2150cdn color laser printer looks like a business bargain. Its low $400 (as of February 25, 2011) purchase price buys you good performance and some expandability. Higher-volume offices should note, however, that the 2150cdn's toner costs range from just average to expensive. Dark, sharp-edged, and monolithic, the 2150cdn has a no-nonsense look that reflects its features. Standard paper handling includes a 250-sheet paper cassette, a manual-feed slot, a 150-sheet top output bin, and automatic duplexing (two-sided printing). Dell sells an optional second 250-sheet paper cassette for $150. The printer comes with 256MB of RAM (upgradable to 768MB) and carries a one-year warranty. Toner cartridges are easy to reach via a side panel, and the entire front of the printer folds down for easy access to paper jams (with removal of the drum). The control panel‘s two-line LCD and small cluster of buttons are simple to use, and the LCD's messages, while curt, are only occasionally confusing. The 2150cdn provides middling speed. In tests, plain-text pages printed at 15.1 pages per minute on the PC and 13.7 ppm on the Mac. A half-page photo on the PC printed at 2.8 ppm at default settings and 1.24 ppm at finer settings.

Dell 2150cdn

Color laser printers often do a better job delivering speed than high-quality output, so when a printer like the Dell 2150cdn ($399.99 direct) comes along, with above-par output quality across the board, it stands out. Aimed at a micro or small office or workgroup, it will be of particular interest to anyone who cares about printing things like professional-looking PowerPoint handouts or marketing materials like tri-fold brochures. This high level of output quality, combined with appropriate speed and paper handling, is enough to earn it an Editors' Choice. Along with the 2150cn ($349.99 direct), which is the same printer without duplexing according to Dell, the 2150cdn is the next step up in Dell's line beyond the Editors' Choice 1350cnw Color LED Printer ($299 direct, 4 stars). Unlike the LED-based 1350cnw, however, the 2150cdn is a true laser. It's also substantially bigger and heavier. At 16.3 by 15.8 by 16 inches (HWD), the 2150cdn is a little too big to share a desk with comfortably, and bigger than most people would want in a home office. It's also heavy enough, at 44.1 pounds, so that you might want some help moving it. However, it's small enough so it shouldn't be hard to find room for in a typical small office.
