Dell 1250c review

At around £100, the Dell 1250c is one of the cheapest colour laser printers that you can buy. It's also very compact for a colour model and, as a result, is likely to be an attractive option for those with small home offices. The 1250c isn't actually a laser printer as such, because, instead of using a scanning laser, it relies on high-intensity LEDs to etch the image being printed onto the toner drum. This makes the printer cheaper to produce, as there are less moving parts. It may also help to make the printer more reliable in the long term. Another advantage of LED technology is that it allows manufacturers to reduce the size of their printers. Indeed, the 1250c is very small for a colour model. In fact, it's not much larger than Dell's 1130 monochrome laser printer, so it'll fit comfortably on most office desks. As with Dell's other budget printers, this one doesn't have an LCD display, but instead makes do with a number of status lights. These are used to indicate when the toner is low in each of the four cartridges, as well as draw your attention to general errors. The control panel also makes do with just two buttons -- a start button and a cancel button. Still, the printer driver includes a software control panel, so you can use that to get more information about any errors that do crop up.

Dell 1250c Color LED Laser-Class Printer

The Dell 1250c is a suitable match for individuals hunting for a single-function laser printer that can output black and color documents in a light-duty printing environment. Its $150 retail price puts it in the same price category as all-in-one multifunction inkjet printers that can fax, copy, and scan along with printing, but if you can't stand waiting for ink to dry, and don't mind a slight drop-off in image print quality, the Dell 1250c's quick output and crisp laser text and graphics earn our endorsement. The Dell 1250c blends into the background of any professional atmosphere with a dark black exterior and an exceptionally small footprint (15.5 inches wide, 11.80 inches deep, 8.9 inches tall) that saves space on your desktop with a fold-down paper output tray and a top-mounted control panel that sits flush on top of the unit. Depending on how you have the printer positioned on your desk, you might not be able to see the indicator LEDs light up unless you physically get out of your seat to look down on it. Regardless, there isn't much to speak of in terms of button controls. You get a button to feed paper into the printer and another to cancel a print job in progress, along with four LED lights that roughly estimate the level of laser toner you have left in the color cartridge, as well as a line drawing of where the cartridges fit into the right side panel.

Dell 1250c

The smaller, less expensive cousin to two Editors' Choice printers - the Dell 2150cdn ($399.99 direct, 4 stars) and Dell 1350cnw Color LED Printer ($299 direct, 4 stars) - the Dell 1250c Color LED Printer ($229.99 direct) is a definitively personal printer, designed primarily for one person's use in any size office. The personal focus shows in its small size, relatively low paper capacity, and lack of wired or wireless network support. However, there's no compromise in speed or output quality, which is enough to make the 1250c an Editors' Choice too. Like the 1350cnw, the 1250c is an LED printer, which means it's similar to a laser, but uses LEDs instead of a laser to draw the image of each page when it prints. One advantage of LEDs is that they help keep the printer size down. In the case of the 1250c, that translates to a printer that's easily small enough, at 8.9 by 15.5 by 11.8-inches (HWD), to share a desk with and light enough, at just 23.1 pounds, for one person to move into place. The input tray holds only 150 sheets, making it suitable for light duty printing only. Setting up the printer is typical for the breed, although the setup instructions could be improved if they included some words instead of relying on pictures.

Dell 1250c

The Dell 1250c color printer uses LED technology instead of the more-common laser to create equally crisp results. Priced at just $230 (as of September 29, 2010), it makes color output seem attainable even for a home office. Unfortunately, exorbitant toner costs make this printer unbearably pricey in the long term. Printer vendors often charge lower-volume users less for the printer and more for the toner, but Dell has set a new record with this model. The printer ships with standard-size, 700-page supplies. The black toner costs $50 (7.1 cents per page), while each color costs $55 (7.9 cents per color, per page). A page with all four colors would cost almost 31 cents. Those prices would look expensive even compared with the costs of a color inkjet printer. The higher-yield supplies, at $70 each, are merely onerous: The black toner lasts 2000 pages (3.5 cents per page), and each color lasts 1400 pages (5 cents per page). A four-color page would cost 18.5 cents. Further disappointment lies in the skimpy design and features. The control panel consists of a couple of clearly labeled buttons and a lot of lights, the meanings of which can vary depending on the color they show and the speed of their blinking--yes, you have to figure out whether it's a fast or slow blink.
