Dell 1130n

The Dell 1130n delivers the basic features we'd expect from a budget monochrome laser printer; it includes wired networking through the Ethernet port on the back, an ample 250-sheet paper tray, and a separate one-sheet manual feed tray for irregular media. We wouldn't think twice about recommending getting the 1130n if you see it on sale, but its simple design and modest functionality don't justify its $180 retail value. If you're on the hunt for a new laser printer, we'd instead point to the Samsung ML-2525W, an aesthetically similar device with the added benefit of Wi-Fi access. The 1130n measures only 14.2 inches wide, 15.3 inches deep, and 7.8 inches tall, and its slim dimensions make it easy to camouflage in a busy work space. As with many laser printers, Dell uses a conservative black for the same reason, with a curved paper path that places the output tray on top of the small, rectangular unit. Conversely, the input tray pulls out of the lower half of the front and can hold up to 250 sheets of standard 8.5x11-inch paper. Dell also tells us the printer can handle approximately 12,000 pages per month (also called the duty cycle), which should be more than enough for up to a medium-size business.

A small black & white single function printer, the Dell 1130n will cost you just under £100 and is identical to the 1130 (on sale at £65) except for its networking capability and additional memory (64 MB instead of 8 MB). This makes the 1130n better adapted to use in an environment where it's shared between several people. The networking feature will cost you £30 or so however. Dell 1130n Laser Printer

The Dell 1130n Laser Printer ($179 direct) is the sort of product that can do the job it's meant for, but isn't anything to get excited about. It offers reasonable speed for a mono laser, for example, but it's significantly slower than others in its price range. Similarly, its output quality is acceptable, but it's a touch below par across the board. And although the printer offers good paper handling, some direct competitors offer more. It's a perfectly reasonable choice, but it doesn't offer any stellar features to make it stand out from the crowd. As you might guess from the price and the fact that the printer includes a network connector, the 1130n is meant primarily to serve as a personal printer in any size office or as a shared printer in a micro office. At 7.8 by 14.2 by 15.3 inches (HWD), it's smaller than many inkjets, which makes it easy to share a desk with, and at 16.1 pounds, it's light enough for one person to move into place. Note that the 1130n is not simply the Dell 1130 Laser Printer ($119 list, N/R) with a network connector added. Among other differences, Dell rates the two printers at different speeds and with different duty cycles (the maximum number of pages they can print per month). So although the two may be superficially similar, they are not the same, and you can't assume that any comments in this review apply to the 1130.
